Here are nine 2022 titles, fresh off the printing press, in children's literary...each perfect, I am sure!

As a former school librarian, I still enjoy doing reviews on new children's literature. I marvel at the work of authors and illustrators and publishing companies that provide great reading materials for the young.

Before I start to read and review these on GoodReads, I thought I would make a poem of the titles. I called it Day Dreaming....

It's moments like this that I love photography. This book was produced by Lee and his wife, who was reading while he turned the pages.

I was hired to photograph a charity event for children's literacy on Saturday, which featured the likes of actor John Lithgow, director Spike Lee, and sex therapist (!) Dr. Ruth. For all photos from the event, see www.flickr.com/photos/carpeicthus/tags/booksforkids

It's really hard to find two celebrities with a bigger height differential -- remember they're SITTING, which should be an equalizer.

It's almost time for the Caldecott Medal for Best Illustrated Picture Book of the year to be announced by the American Library Association. Many librarians, retired librarians and teachers, schools and students across the country hop on board to predict the winner! That's called Mock Caldecott (MoCal)! Here are a few of the MOST OUTSTNADING books written in 2017. My list of potential winners... www.goodreads.com/list/user_vote/5887155

A beautiful picture (Aug 1979) - This great-grandmother had all the time in the world to read to this little guy. All grown up now, he is an avid reader and lover of books!

What I am doing to pass the time...I have returned to a project of scanning old slides and film negatives. It is always a joy to find such a beautiful picture as this!

Finished off a set of 2017 children's books in order to complete a 100 book to be read in 2017 challenge and recorded at GoodReads. I just made it. I read about 15 adult novels and then focused on 2017 children's literature. As a former teacher librarian, I still love reading the brand new books for children and guessing which will win awards. I enjoy writing reviews and posting these in GoodReads and Pinterest, and sometimes on Flickr, Facebook, and Twitter!

A sign with a classic toy turned movie star, along with a few silly puns have been drawing the attention of our students to some books that haven’t been getting off the library shelves much --- our “book potatoes” as they're affectionately known.

As part of our "Book Potato" display, my chipper colleague Reenie surprised me with this tubby tater (he's about 2.5 inches tall) holding a bunch of adorable miniature books. The kids like winding him up and making him walk across the desk, and they especially love looking through the small fry books Reenie made for him to hold. This little sweet potato has lots of spud buds in this school!

I found this adorable potato head family at a local second-hand store for a mere $6, including the giant Mr. Potato Head (on the right) that they were all stored inside. I love it when I find fun props for library displays at such a great price. The kids love stopping by the display to rearrange them!

I'm a huge advocate of library displays (bet you couldn't tell), but I also believe in keeping a tight budget, so checking out local yard sales and second-hand stores is a great way to find afforable props like these.

Thoma's book is covered with scrapped paper sewn together

Small display on a little table surrounded by soft seating in the fiction area.

A quick-to-make display for our junior high students using photos of books with annotations paper-clipped to file folders and a couple of centrepiece signs made from dollar store foam bags, bandanas, and simple printed signs adhered to sticks.

I didn’t pull books for the display, but left them shelved for students to hunt down. Having books for students to grab from the display is great, but our students sometimes need to have a little less “instant gratification” and learn how to find books shelved by the author’s last name. It also helps them learn to browse the shelves and have their attention captured by books they may not notice otherwise.

I realized after the fact that the little bubbles under the big thought bubble look like caterpillars hanging down, but it’s supposed to be a short-lived display so I’m hopeful no one will notice! :)

For our "Warm Books for Cold Days" display, I brought in lots of flannel plaid pillows and cozy blankets.

When I posted this photo, it was -35 degrees Celsius outside (-31 degrees Fahrenheit), so our students really have enjoyed coming into the library to warm up and read. I can hardly get them to go home after school!

As requested, here's a JPG version of this sign with a white background. Feel free to use electronically or in print format as needed.

I stuck the post for this sign holder through six Styrofoam balls for a frosty snowball-stacked look.

Quick and very simple display centrepiece using a gift bag, four bandanas for colour, and a couple of printed signs (double-sided) to attract attention to recent library additions.

This silly little snowman is actually riding a snowboard. He looks kind of funny from the back. Maybe the manufacturer should have put pants on him! :)

Cut apart these bookmarks and slip into books on display or on shelves, leaving them peeking out of the top of the pages or to attract attention to new books or books of specific genres. A black and white version is also available in my photostream.

Printable / digital header for book list or display.

A favourite book with our students and staff alike, with a Canadian maple leaf toque.

Printable “flags” for making your own double-sided “Winter Reads” banner. Print, cut out, fold in half, and hang over a string. Readable from both sides!

You will need to print TWO of each flag.

To see an example of how they were used, search “Winter Reads” or “flags” in my photo stream, or check my collections on the right. I glued my flags only at the bottom to for a puffly look, but you may wish to fold and glue both sides flat to each other.

The flags in the photo were printed on legal-size paper (8.5 inches x 14”)
