I took this photo because i liked the way the feather was lit and had a shadow and because I liked the flames on the bookcover.
Um, I was struggling too much with the title font and style, etc so I gave up. Anything I did looked like a cheap 90s novel, it's supposed to look like 1950s dammit. It was gonna say "Sally Cyborg: Adventures on Alpha 9" or something like that.
Ngl, I'm pretty sure I have a crush on this minifigure now.
Riffing on the oft-used troupe in sci-fi illustration of juxtaposing two disparate motifs, ancient/modern, gigantic/macroscopic and in this case, heaven/hell.
Not sure this composition works; I had issues getting plenty of height in the towers but then making the witch too small and unimposing. I tried more dynamic angles but wasn't impressed so I resorted to a pretty flat arrangement. It's good to be challenged by this portrait format that I don't using shot in, not every picture will be successful. It's healthy to be defeated sometimes. I still like it, it just bugs me that somethings not right with it.
One of those anthology-style covers with a semi-abstract image that doesn't relate to any specific story within. I was happy to catch the late afternoon sun coming through my window and snapped this pic on the build table.

The vertical format is challenging to work with. Originally there were two evil dudes dragging the spaceman via chains but I had trouble fitting all three characters into the frame plus the orb in the background. Also, in this arrangement the figure's face is more clearer. So everything became more simplified: no chains, no evil gang. Being overpowered by two aliens seems more believable than one, maybe they're supper strong?
Again, thanks to Ted Andes for the encouragement :-)

Great cover design by Paul Rand. Borzoi-Knopf (1956). This is the actual first printing of the book. Knopf issued some of their titles in paperback form as a test run and if the book sold, they would then print a hardcover edition.
