Christmas 1943 my dad was a PoW in a workcamp at the cement factory of Dyckerhoff und Widmann in Cossebaude, west of Dresden.

In his diaries he records a touch of humanity: "Christmas Evening saw us in the works canteen where there was a piano. The Kommandant was there and he gave a bottle of beer to everyone who did a turn......"

The idea here was to find something that would unite the creation and destruction at the same time. He had a pencil color here at home that the children used to scribble when his parents came to visit me. The pencils were a tree that had to be dropped so that someone, as a designer, architect or engineer, using it to create.

-----------------

No matter how many times I visit Mono Lake, I never get tired of it, because the conditions are always changing. Last Saturday we saw clouds forming on the Web cam, so we made the quick trip down to the lake. When we arrived, we enjoyed spectacular clouds, columns of rain, a double rainbow, occasional thunder and lightning on the horizon, and subtle shading of sunset and blue hour color. You can be sure I'll be back many times as I run up and down the Eastern Sierra chasing Fall colors over the next 6 weeks!

This book just came out in Germany and, if you like decay/abandoned imagery, this is a must have. The authors selected 18 of their favorite photographers throughout the world, and my wife and I are humbled to have been selected. We have 10 images in side the book, along with 1 on the back cover ( bonus points if you know which one it is ) . If you are interested in buying the book , it's available on Amazon in Germany ( www.amazon.de/Welt-verlassenen-Orte-Worlds-Places/dp/3954... )

Note on reverse (below) translated by xiphophilos.

The mine crater produced by an explosion during the English attack from 25 September 1915. 10 meters deep, approximately 30 meters in diameter. This date indicates the mine was detonated on the first day of the Battle of Loos.

The following is feedback I received from military-historian and author Phillip Robinson after I sent him a copy of the photo for comment.

"So far as I can ascertain from British tunnelling company war diaries two mines were fired at the opening of the battle of Loos on 25 Sept. 15.

176 Tunnelling Company war diary for 25/9/15 says:- “Look Out mine charge fired at 5:58 am at commencement of the attack. Crater about 60 feet [presume diameter] embracing the German trench”. Regrettably there is no other information about this mine; the charge, the location etc, nor whether the British infantry took and held it.

173 Tunnelling Company war diary for 25/9/15 states:- “The mine under the German salient was fired successfully at 5:48 am. Crater 92 feet across and debris covered trenches for 30 yards on either side. A German mine at the N end of the salient was entered and explored on the morning of 25-9-15 during the attack and a small charge fired at 12:30 pm when we retired”. As with the 176 Tun Coy war diary there isn’t any other information about the charge or the location but it is evident that the crater was abandoned to the Germans.

Both mining companies appear to have been operating at the northern end of the Loos battlefield. 176 was certainly operating north of the La Bassee canal, and possibly astride it. I haven’t been able to pin down exactly where 173 were at the time but more likely just to the north of Loos. However the various tunnelling company sections were in several places.

It is tempting to think that “The Salient” was the Hohenzollern redoubt, but if so why didn’t they call it such? What is clear is that the 173 Tun Coy mine crater was abandoned to the Germans so it either has to be at the Hohenzollern Redoubt (which was a salient), or on the southern flank of the Loos battlefield. Contrary to popular belief the battle of Loos was relatively successful, by the standards of the time, as in the centre significant advances were made including the taking of Loos, so if the crater was subsequently occupied by the Germans it must have been either at the northern or southern flanks."

just published by BLURB: our NEW YORK book; 1997 we (Frizztext is a team: Barbara + Dietmar Fritze, Germany) tried to create a NEW YORK photo collection in a certain lyrical mood; we adored the NEW YORK book of Inge Morath (wife of Arthur Miller) and we liked to read the novels of John Dos Passos or the lyrics of Lawrence Ferlinghetti; maybe the mood has changed after 2001/9/11 - or not, what do you think?

John Dos Passos (1896-1970) had tried to compose an artwork built of the stuff: NEW YORK, - and it worked like a movie script - but written in a time (1925), in which the film industry did not yet have the tremendous technical and financially possibilities available as they owe today. Dos Passos portrayed the movement, the speed, the unstoppable energy of this city. The title of his novel "MANHATTAN TRANSFER" deciphered in the scene as the main character sat in a subway and the rhythmic strides seem to sound like "MAN-Hattan TRANS__FER. MAN-Hattan TRANS__FER. MAN-Hattan TRANS__FER". Every human being like a leaf in the wind seems to be fenced in by the tempo of the city. ..

Our Daily Challenge...END/ENDINGS

After graduation I found myself with more free time, so I started picking up some books to read. I never was a big fan or reading, but nowadays I find myself taking trips to my local used bookstore to see what else I can find. I got a Kindle eReader for Christmas and now I have a full queue of eBooks loaded waiting to be read!

Right now I'm in the middle of reading the Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth. Pretty good so far!
