One of my fondest memories of my grandparents was watching my Grandmother roll the bones to help decide what to do with problems. She was from the Old Country and met my Grandfather on the same boat as they were coming to America. Not only was it fun to hear them speak in German, it was cool all the rituals she did that at the time I didn't understand until when I became involved with the craft. I tried to learn this art but I do not use it all the time. Just like she would read futures in the tea leaves, I prefer tarot cards and runes. This is my own set that I have collected and clean and enlightened myself. I know, you all are probably getting tired of my Pagan themes here!
The Bone Caves are a series of natural caves set into a high limestone cliff called Creag nan Uamh (Crag of the Caves). The caves are named for the large numbers of animal bones found during excavations.
There are four main cave openings in the cliffs, formed before the last ice age by water dissolving limestone in cracks in the surrounding rock. Subsequent glacial action and erosion of the glen by water left the caves hundreds of feet above the valley floor.
There is no indication that the caves were ever used as human habitat, but two separate human burials have been discovered within the caves.
In total, over 1000 pieces of reindeer antler have been found in the Bone Caves, with dates ranging from 47,000 to 8,300 years ago.
One rare find was the skull of a Northern lynx, dated to 1,770 years ago. This is the only Northern lynx ever found in Scotland. Other intriguing remains include a possible polar bear, arctic fox, wolf, and brown bear.

This round boney structure is part of the whales hearing mechanism .... it is unique to marine mammals (harbor seals have one that is half the size). I had always heard it called a boulla but couldn't find any reference to it in any of my books (or google, yikes).
I learned a lot about marine mammal hearing in the process:
- sound waves in water reach the inner ear through the skull from all directions at once and to improve directionality ... the inner ear is located so it doesn't directly touch any bones in the skull. (Riedman 1990).
- baleen whale hearing is designed to hear lower frequency tones and toothed whales higher frequency (Tyack 2000)

After the first day we removed all the bones we put out for the vultures and hid them in a bucket inside the hide.
The ravens had been completely successful in keeping the beardies away from our offerings and we thought that bone collecting would ensure a double helping (and a more substantial looking fare) for the next day. This tactic of ours had one bonus... Very soon after putting out the bait the next morning this jackal made its appearance to grab a bite. This animal would probably get all the food it wants "after hours", but we had prevented that by cleaning up.

Found this cool store on Solano Ave. in Berkeley that has been there for 20 years called the Bone Room. They have all kinds of interesting taxidermy, bones, and casts of human skulls. I bought my good friend a spider broach with black rhinestones.
