Finally decided to go and see this bird that is apparently part of a reintroduction programme in the Alps, but has travelled north for its summer holidays and has been around in the Dark Peak for several months this summer, looking like it emerged from Mordor.

It was an early start to get to Crowden before sunrise. Also a bit of a pull walking briskly with another chap up the side of the ridge from the car park, to get close to the overnight roost location just below Black Tor on the Pennine Way path; but not too bad, despite lugging camera / lens, tripod and ruc-sac.

Unfortunately, dawn broke to dismal grey overcast light, worse than I anticipated from the forecast. We had just arrived at the bird's roost on Black Tor, the bird was quickly spotted in the roost, I was setting up the camera, when frustratingly, after a brief stretch of wings it immediately flew out across the Crowden valley, over the opposite valley ridge and departed for 2 hours. We hoped that wasn't it for the day.

Eventually the sun emerged half heartedly for half an hour, then disappeared behind a bank of low grey cloud, just as the bird reappeared for 10 minutes of relatively close flying, over and in front of the roost cliffs, occasionally mobbed by other birds (Common Buzzard and Kestrel). Eventually she got fed up and flew away south.

The sun re-emerged and we were treated to a beautiful sunny day, but no vulture. She eventually reappeared at 2:10, circa half to one mile to the north, up valley over Laddow Rocks, but was immediately mobbed by a Red Kite and a Raven and settled on a buttress at Rakes Rocks. After further mobbing she disappeared again, before returning from the south just as I was leaving at 4:30pm, but she disappeared back up to Rakes Rocks, so I didn't stick around.

Excellent to see this huge bird with 10 foot wingspan, disappointing as to the marginal light when she appeared more closely, and consequent rather flat and soft photographic outcomes, though I dialled the ISO down after the initial departure from the roost when the sun emerged and didn't dial the ISO back up when she reappeared in overcast light at 8:40, so slower shutter than would have been ideal. My mistake. The low light and dark appearance of the bird agains the sky also necessitated high exposure compensation, which was not ideal. I hope I can make it back for another go.

Looks as though she's moving south, on cliffs at Lathkill Dale in the White Peak Saturday and no sign there this morning. Seen on Sunday afternoon high over Leicestershire.

One of my daughters kindly loaned me that vintage bone-marrow scoop at Christmas. I've finally got around to including it in a light-painted still-life!

I used to buy Jasmine raw beef bones but they always gave her diarrhea so I was reluctant to give to Echo but some of my Flickr friends have had good success giving their puppy the small round bones, so I decided to try it today. They are a BIG hit with Echo. With her teething so much, they really satisfy her need to chew and last's a lot longer than conventional doggy chews.

Editor's note: great story we posted today about how a NASA light technology, originally developed for plant growth experiments in space, is being used to reduce the side effects of various medical treatments, including those for cancer, wounds, etc. You can read more about the technology here: www.nasa.gov/topics/nasalife/features/heals.html. I love success stories like this!

Special High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS technology developed for NASA's commercial plant growth experiments in space is helping to treat cancer and save lives on Earth. NASA has partnered with Quantum Devices Inc. (QDI) of Barneveld Wis., to develop the WARP 75 light delivery system device for wound healing. A two-year clinical trial using the WARP 75 device on cancer patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants, concluded that there was a 96-percent chance that the improvement in pain relief of those in the high-risk patient group was the result of the HEALS treatment. The clinical trial was funded by NASA's Innovative Partnerships Program at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The NASA program works with industry and commercial partners to spinoff space technology and adapt it for new, innovative applications.

Since being introduced to Linh Anh by a dear friend a few months ago, they have become my favourite place for Vietnamese cuisine. Their food is absolutely delicious and their presentation is the best I've seen at restaurants with similar offerings.

The beef steak dish with roasted bone marrow was beautifully presented on a sizzling cast iron plate, with pate, egg, vegetables, and a baguette. It looked better than my photos!

The tomato based soup with vermicelli had lots of ingredients, including sausage, pork, shrimps, crab, tofu, vegetables, and more. It was colourful and apparently very tasty!

I had the grilled chicken and grilled pork chop with rice. It was all perfectly cooked and delicious!

This bone core is from a 34-year-old male who presented after noticing a swelling over two years ago. The diagnosis of follicular lymphoma was made at another institution, but he was referred here for staging and treatment.

This is an excellent example of the characteristic paratrabecular infiltrate of follicular lymphoma when it involves the bone marrow. More often, the involvement is subtle and easy to overlook.

Flow cytometry came back showing B-cell markers and CD10 on the tumor cells.

Mitzi Macke, RN, a nurse in the Bone Marrow Transplant and Cellular Therapy Unit at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, demonstrates use of a WARP 75 device. The device uses High Emissivity Aluminiferous Luminescent Substrate, or HEALS, which is a type of LED technology that provides intense light energy. The innovation of the NASA HEALS technology provides the equivalent light energy of 12 suns from each of the 288 LED chips -- each the size of a grain of salt. The WARP 75 device is one of many devices using HEALS technology, developed in collaboration with NASA. The WARP 75 device was used for light therapy treatment on cancer patients during a two-year clinical trial funded by NASA's Innovative Partnerships Program at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. The NASA program works with industry and medical partners to spinoff space technology and adapt it for new, innovative medical applications. The clinical trial found that 670 nanometers of light technology, used for plant growth experiments on the International Space Station, improved the painful side effects of chemotherapy and radiation in cancer patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. The trial included 20 cancer patients from Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, and 60 cancer patients from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital and the Children's Hospital of Alabama, also in Birmingham.
