Bogotá is the capital city of Colombia, and one of the largest cities in the world. The city is located in the center of Colombia, on a high plateau known as the Bogotá savanna, located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. Bogotá is the third-highest capital in South America and in the world after Quito and La Paz, at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level.
The city's airport, El Dorado International Airport, named after the mythical El Dorado, handles the largest cargo volume in Latin America, and is third in number of passengers. Bogotá is home to the largest number of universities and research centers in the country, and is an important cultural center, with many theaters, libraries and museums.

With a population over 11 million, Bogotá is both the capital and the largest city in Colombia. Bogotá is typically cool and cloudy due to its high elevation in the Andes Mountains. The average elevation is 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. This is a view of central Bogotá from Monserrate Sanctuary at the top of Monserrate Mountain. It requires a long steep funicular ride or cable car to get to the top which is 3,152 metres (10,341 ft) above sea level.
