I saw this padaung girl as a tourism object in Chiang Mai...
His face look like if she is imagining his uncertain future...
Whether she will be a tourism object like now, or she could study and get same opportunity like other girl
The Bodi (or Meen) tribe lives close to the Omo River in southern Ethiopia (Omo Valley) and has the Mursi tribe as south neighbor and Konso at north; It is a pastoral and agricultural tribe, thus livestock plays a large role in the tribe; Along the banks of the river, they cultivate sorghum, maize and coffee;
For their new year in June, called Kael, Bodi men consume large amounts of blood and milk to become overweight;Â This tradition measures the body fat of a contestant; Each family or clan is allowed to present an unmarried contestant;Â The winner of this contest is awarded great fame by the tribe;Â The women in the tribe wear goatskin skirts and have a plug inserted into their chin; Most of them are now Christians;
In Hana Mursi, the main town of the Bodis, the government plans to settle 300 000 people from all over Ethiopia over the next few years; Along with the workers and soldiers, AIDS and Hepatitis B are coming too; The Bodi tribespeople do not want to give up their traditions and their land to allow the new sugar cane plantations irrigated by the water of Gibe 3 dam, and live in the settlements planned by the government; If the Konso tribe attempts to set foot on their land with the support of the government, clashes will erupt as the Bodi elders predict;

Beneath the hum of life’s traffic, they drift through grey paved veins,
While city pulses thrumming fast ignore their quiet pains.
A thousand footsteps hurry past the hollowed, vacant stare,
As minds unspool like tangled thread in petrol-scented air.
The neon fractals splinter light on glass and cold concrete,
Midst ghosts of unsaid agonies that haunt the crowded street.
Locked out from warmth and sanity, they wander on their own,
Bewildered in a labyrinth of concrete and polished stone.

Returning the photographer's gaze - sometimes with a proud and knowing smile, an indignant look of resistance and mimicry, or a long-studied stare as the observer becomes the observed. The gaze is returned, the observer othered. Subject owns the gaze for a frozen moment.
Young Tsemai woman with tattooed facial markings at the weekly market in Key Afer, a small multi-ethnic frontier town in the remote lower Omo Valley of southwestern Ethiopia. Shot near the end of a long hot dry season regularly exceeding 40°C in the shade. The Tsemai are one of the least known ethnic groups in the Omo Valley, numbering around 5000 people in settlements along the west bank of the Weito River.

"To possess the world in the form of images is, precisely, to re-experience the unreality and remoteness of the the real."
Susan Sontag, On Photography
Young Mursi mother with ornamental clay lip-plate. Semi-nomadic pastoral settlement situated on the upper bank of the Mago River, a tributary that joins the essential Omo River in a remote corner of southwestern Ethiopia.
On the meaning of lip-plates in Mursi culture and society
The Mursi are one of the last groups in Africa where women still wear large wooden or clay plates in their lower lips. Most Mursi women wear lip-plates as an aesthetic symbol of cultural pride and identity, signifying passage to womanhood/adulthood.
The labrets are worn more frequently by unmarried or newly wed women and are generally worn when serving men food or during important ritual events (weddings, men's duelling competitions, communal dances, safari photo-ops).
Cow-horn designs are engraved along the borders of this labret, signifying Mursi dependance on cattle herding for their livelihood.
Debunking popular myths
Contrary to popular opinion among travellers and other passing strangers, ethnographers found little or no connection between the size of a woman’s lip-plate and the size of her bridewealth (cattle, guns).
Anthropologists and ethnographers have debunked another popular myth. They found no evidence that the labret originated as a deliberate attempt to disfigure and make women less attractive to slave traders, yet this myth seems to surface regularly in accounts by both amateur and professional photographers, Safari tourists, and bloggers alike.
The Mursi and Mursiland
Most Mursi live in small settlements dispersed across Mursiland, a remote territory of about thirty by eighty kilometres between the Omo and Mago Rivers in southwestern Ethiopia, a day or two overland to the borders with South Sudan and northern Kenya.
The terrain varies from a volcanic plain dominated by a range of hills and a major watershed to a riverine forest, wooded grasslands and thorny bushland thickets. The climate is harsh and unstable with low rainfall and daily temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in the shade during the dry season.
The Mursi are semi-nomadic farmers and herders who depend on shifting hoe-cultivation (mostly drought-resistant varieties of sorghum) and cattle herding for their livelihood. They number less than ten thousand today.
