An itch (also known as pruritus) is a sensation that causes a strong desire or reflex to scratch. Itches have many similarities to pain, and while both are unpleasant sensory experiences, their behavioural response patterns are different. Pain creates a withdrawal reflex, whereas itches lead to a scratch reflex.

Mursi mother adorned with an ornamental clay lip-plate, a wild boar's ivory tusk (Warthog canine tooth), facial chalk markings, and decorated goat-skin clothing - from a small semi-nomadic pastoral settlement situated on the upper bank of the Mago River, a tributary that joins the essential Omo River in a remote corner of southwestern Ethiopia.
On the meaning of lip-plates in Mursi culture and society
The Mursi are one of the last groups in Africa where women still wear large wooden or clay plates in their lower lips. Most Mursi women wear lip-plates as an aesthetic symbol of cultural pride and identity, signifying passage to womanhood/adulthood.
The labrets are more frequently worn by unmarried or newly wed women and are generally worn when serving men food or during important ritual events (weddings, men's duelling competitions, communal dances, safari photo-ops).
Debunking popular myths
Contrary to popular opinion among travellers and other passing strangers, ethnographers found little or no connection between the size of a woman’s lip-plate and the size of her bridewealth (cattle, guns).
Anthropologists and ethnographers have debunked another popular myth. They found no evidence that the labret originated as a deliberate attempt to disfigure and make women less attractive to slave traders, yet this myth seems to surface regularly in accounts by both amateur and professional photographers, Safari tourists, and bloggers alike.
The Mursi and Mursiland
Most Mursi live in small settlements dispersed across Mursiland, a remote territory of about thirty by eighty kilometres between the Omo and Mago Rivers in southwestern Ethiopia, a day or two overland to the borders with South Sudan and northern Kenya.
The terrain varies from a volcanic plain dominated by a range of hills and a major watershed to a riverine forest, wooded grasslands and thorny bushland thickets. The climate is harsh and unstable with low rainfall and daily temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C in the shade during the dry season.
The Mursi are semi-nomadic farmers and herders who depend on shifting hoe-cultivation (mostly drought-resistant varieties of sorghum) and cattle herding for their livelihood. They number less than ten thousand today.

I recently met Chloe as part of this project at the iconic Circular Quay (Sydney CBD). It was quite an interesting meetup as we chatted for about an hour or so about her visit to Sydney from Adelaide. We met at the museum of contemporary art near the Rocks. I got immediately interested about her different tattoos. She works as a manager for a retail chain and since she has to work a lot she came to Sydney for a change. Since Adelaide is much smaller compared to Sydney, it attracted her for its liveliness and activity. Even with a complete stranger, she was very friendly and very cooperative and that made this session super fun and engaging.

Goal:
To attain an absolute resistance to pain, strength, and level of self control. 99% of the general population could not achieve this, nor can most comprehend it.

Spirit over pain.
Northern Thailand - These women of Karen descent have coils of metal that are put on them as young children. The coils are replaced with longer ones as the women grow up. They don't actually elongate the neck, but they depress the collar bones giving the illusion of longer necks. The women work, eat, sleep, everything in these coils 24/7.
"Long-necked" Padaung refugee in the village of Noi Soi near Mae Hong Son, Northern Thailand. As a custom, women wear brass ornaments which may weigh up to 22kg around their necks. It is said that if the coils were removed, the women's necks would collapse from atrophy. However, according to others, the women have continued this tradition to attract tourists, and they actually remove the colils every night before going to bed.
This Paduang woman is a fine example of modern Paduang beauty (note the cheek paintings and colorful hair scarves).
This neck ring adornment is started when the girls are 5 or 6 years old and additional rings are added with each passing year.
I found out that their necks are actually the same size as yours and mine. The rings push their shoulders down (abnormally) which gives the long neck apprearance.
Most people know of the Karen people from the media as the "long-neck" or "giraffe" tribe. The appearance of a longer neck is actually a visual illusion. The weight of the rings pushes down the collar bone, as well as the upper ribs, to such an angle that the collar bone actually appears to be a part of the neck!
