BO DIDDLEY "BO DIDDLEY"
This new set starts with a celebration of Bo Diddley who sadly died earlier this week. Bo was the first real musician I saw live, internet research revealing it to have been on Oct 24th 1963 at the Birmingham Odeon, almost certainly the earlier of two shows due to my age and the early time of the last bus back home! Bo topped the bill, supported by The Everly Bros and Little Richard. Way down the pecking order were a little known group called The Rolling Stones on their first UK tour!
To call it a revelation is to underplay the impact it made. He also clearly impressed The Stones who shortly afterwards released "Not Fade Away" and "Mona", both with Bo's trademark beat.
The photo features my favourite of his LP's, Bo Diddley's Beach Party, one of the earliest live albums, full of raw energy and overloaded distorted amps - just stunning, remaining until today as one of THE great live recordings. Below is a replacement YouTube link....... as so often, the lawyers got to the first one!

The man known as Bo Diddley was born near Magnolia, Mississippi in 1928. His birth name was Otha Ellas Bates. He was raised by a relative in Chicago where his name was legally changed to Ellas Bates McDaniel. As a youth, he studied music and learn to play the violin and guitar. As a youth man, he formed a band, however, he could not make a living playing with his band. He worked at a number of different jobs before creating his distinctive rhythm and his pioneering use of electronic distortion. Soon he took on the name "Bo Diddley." In the 1950s and early 1960s, Bo Diddley played a key role in the transition from the blues to rock and roll. He influenced many artists, including Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton.
Bo Diddley received numerous accolades in recognition of his role as one of the founders of rock and roll. Among them is a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Blues Hall of Frame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Frame, among many other forms of recognitions. Bo Diddley died in 2008.
