#Cotton

Happy New Year, dear MM participants and Flickr friends :)

Flickr seems to be back to normal again :)

When I read that the first theme of 2022 is "Cotton", I first thought of denim, because I love denim. But I was also curious what cotton fibres are used for aside from the obvious – fabric or cotton wool. So I did some research, and to my great surprise I've learned that Euro notes (and banknotes in most other countries) are made of cotton. I'd assumed that the paper used for banknotes would be a special one, but I'd have never guessed that the main part is cotton. Modern Euro notes are made of pure cotton paper; a silver band and special fibres that glow under UV and infrared light are incorporated. The integrated watermark is made by varying the thickness of the paper.

I've photographed the backside of a 50 Euro note. It's the small part, showing Europa, that repeats the watermark, where on the front side there's the silver band. Lightsources were two LED soft lights placed to the left and right (with a hint of backlight) of the banknote, and a handheld flashlight from the front to make the silvery fibres glow. It's a single high-res shot, processed in DXO PhotoLab 5 only. I'm not quite happy with the blurry left edge, and I have a focus stacked image (taken today) that is sharp from edge to edge, but in the end the more colourful version (which I couldn't repeat today, I just didn't get the light right) won, because it was... more colourful – and Europa also looks nicer here, although not any happier than in the edge-to-edge sharp shot. Which tempts me to sing to her: "Life is a Cabaret, old chum, come to the Cabaret!", but I don't sing in public, and the mark that Liza Minelli has set is, of course, unreachable for me ;)

HMM, Everyone, stay safe and take care!

Naturalmente stanno tutti fermi, o camminano piano, come si fa in in museo; ma per una strana associazione di idee ho immaginato che improvvisamente potessero mettersi a ballare.

Another variation the theme, this time using a studio and lighting setup I intend to use for a model shoot next week.

For this setup I followed Zach Arias' blog post from April 2008 on using a seamless white backdrop. The backdrop is a 108" roll of seamless white paper, and on top of that are two Thrifty White tile boards from Home Depot, which provides a nicely reflective white surface for the subject, so it doesn't appear to just be floating in space.

The key light is an AlienBees B400, reflected from a 7' parabolic white umbrella, on axis and above the camera, pointing 45 degrees down. The background is light with a pair of B400s with their reflectors behind gobos to keep light off the subject and camera. All three lights were triggered as optical slaves to a small on camera flash that did not significantly contribute to the exposure.

As it turns out, the B400 really wasn't powerful enough as the key light so far from the subject and with the modifier. I had keep the flash at full power and open up the aperture and bump up the ISO to get to the desired exposure. For the next series, I intend to replace the key with a B1600 to get two more stop of light to work with.

This photo was inspired by the costumes and choreography of Bob Fosse.

The key light was an AlienBees B1600 on axis and above the camera. It was reflected off a Westcott 7' parabolic white umbrella. The key light was triggered via a sync cable. The background was seamless white paper illuminated with a pair of AlienBees B400s with 7" reflectors, triggered as optical slaves. Each was behind a gobo to keep its light from spilling on to the subject and camera.

Here are some of the highlights from our AICI WDC June 26th, 2011 trip to New York City via Reston Limousine. It was a grand day in the Big Apple. We started with brunch in the heart of theater district at "Sardis" the toast of Broadway. Known for the hundreds of caricatures of show-business celebrities that adorn its walls. Sardi's opened at its current location on March 5, 1927. After brunch Roxy L. Rowton, Denise Lewis, Cindy Ann Peterson, Katrina Van Dopp, Jane McFadden and Kellie Renich explored and shopped NYC.

At 28-29 seconds look for Dom DeLuise. As might be said for the late and great comedians Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn, it seems that Mel Brooks was the only director on the planet who knew how to best utilize this funnyman's talents on film. Brooks once quipped that, whenever he hired Dom DeLuise for one of his films, he would instinctively add another two days to the schedule because of the constant laughter Dom provided on the set -- especially when the camera started rolling.

At 32-33 seconds, see if you can spot, Michael Douglas, Chazz Palminteri, Morgan Freeman, Tammy Grimes, Alison Brown (Broadway Star of Mary Poppins), Julia Louis Dreyfus or Bob Fosse. Have fun.

I finally broke down and sent Tyler out this weekend. He came back with this sleek black "quad" style (so called because of the four feet at the bottom). It doesn't help so much with walking as it gives me something to lean on when I have to stop every few steps to rest.

Here's the part where you come in ... Get busy all you creative and crafty cats and kittens! Any kind of stickers or labels (like file folder or address labels) stick to it (no post-its please, they fall right off!), it is about 2" in diameter so things could be tied around it, and the little ledge at the bottom could fit a tiny mascot or two. So tiny printed photos, notes, graffiti-like tags, anything like that would work on it. Think of it as kind of like signing someone's cast in the digital age and it's not a cast it's a cane.

If you are interested in pimping my cane, please email or flickr mail me for my mailing address, or you can email a file to me to be printed on an address label.
