The motorized surf-board concept featured in the July 1936 issue of Modern Mechanix was certainly an ambitious idea, but there’s no clear evidence that it was ever widely adopted in outboard racing. The design, with its cigar-shaped sponsons and cantilever outriggers, was meant to provide stability at high speeds, but it seems to have remained more of a futuristic concept rather than a practical racing innovation.

 

The accompanying article, "Splitting the Waves with the Outboard Racers," discusses the evolution of outboard racing, but there’s no indication that this specific motorized surf-board became a standard racing craft. While outboard racing has seen many innovations over the years, most competitive designs have leaned toward hydroplanes and tunnel hull boats, which offer superior speed and maneuverability. Still, it’s fascinating to see how inventive minds in the 1930s imagined the future of aquatic sports.

66 feet long six feet wide three feet deep twenty or so inch draft (fully loaded) - the Durham Boat was double ended (sharp at the front and stern), flat bottomed, sixty-six feet long, six feet wide, three feet deep, used but twenty or so inches of water when fully loaded, and was propelled along the shoreline by setting steel tipped poles into the river bed, the other end against the boatman’s shoulder who walked from the bow to the stern of the boat. Oars were used in the center of the river and to cross the river say at Bristol. A crew of three to six men was used per boat. At one time there was a fleet of a thousand of Durham boats on the Delaware giving employment to several thousand men whose job it was to move cargo down the river to Bristol and Philadelphia. Durham boats were "confiscated" by George Washington and used to carry his army across the Delaware River at a spot now known as Washington’s Crossing, PA in order for his troops to surprise the Hessians at Trenton on Christmas Day, 1776. A Durham Boat could make the trip from Durham to Philadelphia in one full day. Depending on the size of the boat, it could carry ten to seventeen tons of cargo. The return trip was more arduous as it had to proceed against the current. Much muscle was needed by the boatmen to pole the boat back to Durham.

 

Testimony by some historians via their interviews (History of Bucks County, by W.W.H Davis, 1905 and J.H. Battle, 1887) indicate that the first Durham boat was built by Robert Durham on the river bank near the mouth of the cave at Durham, circa 1730, but all of this is hearsay evidence that has been passed down via the generations.

 

The Durham boat style came into disservice with the advent of canals where yet a different type of construction and style was used to carry freight. The Canal Boat went out of service because of improved roadways and the invention of steamboats and steam engines used on railroads.

the crossing of the Delaware River would not have been possible without an expert crew to navigate George Washington and his boat through the icy waters of the Delaware River. Patriot soldiers from Marblehead, Massachusetts under the command of John Glover met these vital criteria. Author Ann Hawkes Hutton discusses the skills and perseverance of these professional fishermen in her book, “George Washington Crossed Here.” Together, these men loyally followed Washington from the Battle of Brooklyn, through Manhattan, and finally to New Jersey. As a testament to their courage Hutton writes, “The crossing had looked too difficult to several of the other generals who had agreed to make the crossing that night…But General Washington crossed!” The men of Marblehead, Massachusetts put their knowledge of dangerous waters to use as they expertly navigated their way from the shores of Pennsylvania to Trenton, New Jersey in the Durham boats.

Dengan Panjang Keseluruhan (LoA) 14 meter, lebar (B) 3,2 meter, tinggi geladak (H) 1.80 meter kapal ini dibuat dan dipergunakan sebagai penangkap ikan dengan menggunakan mesin induk (Outboard Engine) Mitsubishi 150 HP dan didukung dengan mesin bantu (genset) 1 x 2 kVA.

 

Tidak seperti biasanya, kapal ini di poles dengan cat warna hijau muda sesuai dengan keinginan pemesannya. Dari proses perancangan, pengerjaan hingga penyelesaian biaya yang dikeluarkan kurang dari lima ratus juta.

The first night was spent at Sand Island, just offshore from St. Helens, Oregon. Myles Twete's electric barge boat,,Reach of Tide; Bo Neill's 26' Bartender, Glencannon; Earl Boissonou's Glen-L Bo Jest, Dr. Petra. Reach of Tide didn't have enough range to get to Cathlamet and back, so Myles and his wife did a circumnavigation of Sauvie's Island instead.
