A BNSF freight crosses the Clark Fork at Paradise, Montana, on September 17, 2006. Leading the eastbound manifest on Montana Rail Link’s Fourth Subdivision is former Santa Fe GE B40-8 No. 8610 in good-looking Heritage I paint.
The Early morning Sun lights up the Nose of the GE ES44C4 loco at Dixon, MT as the Oil train heads East towards Missoula, MT.
BNSF's H NTWSUP crosses the Net River at Holyoke, MN behind BNSF 558 and 1833 on May 24, 2022. About every other trip, BNSF still uses some interesting older EMDs on this freight from the Twin Ports to the Twin Cities, but this is the first time I've seen a B40-8W, at least in my recent memory.
4790 east meets 5315 west.
Loaded grain is pulling into the siding as the merchandise eases down the mainline. 5315 was brand new and looking great.

Much has been written over the years about the mystique of the Santa Fe and the boundless beauty of the Southwest in which the railroad built through to achieve the Pacific. Kingman Canyon testifies to that as a westbound vehicle train is escorted downgrade by a trio of BNSF C4s.

Almost all in BNSF paint. Liked the looks of the C40-8. Didn't see many of them get painted personally.

Some "new" power for the BNSF.
Remember reading these rebuilt CN SD40's would be captive to all lines east of Northtown. Didn't take long for that to become disinformation.

Empty trailers gathered up from Billings on their way east for reloading.
At the time this was a quiet spot and just right for a city of honey bees. Now there's an oil load out that handles two trains at a time.

Nothing but SD70 MAC's with the nicest one leading.
Track speed is no problem with this empty coal train.

BNSF SD40-2s 1957 and 1669 work southbound on CN trackage through West Wye at Iron Junction, MN, returning to Kelly Lake nearly a decade ago on April 12, 2012.
BN/BNSF has brought the bentonite directly to Minorca Mine via trackage rights for over 40 years since the mine opened back in the late-1970s. It's not that much business, but maybe the mine has paid for this run to remind DMIR/CN that two carriers have rights into Minorca.
Back 10 years ago, BNSF was making this run on Thursdays, so with a day off I braved the mud season and followed them with the main goal of getting them at the Griswolds in Hibbing. My shots in Hibbing were only so-so as they ran light east to Minorca and came back west with nosy light, but I did get numerous shots of the H1 pair at other locations on the Range.
BNSF still runs Kelly Lake to Minorca once a week but the small fleet of SD40-2s still assigned to Superior don't have PTC, so Geeps are now the normal power on this run, usually on Wednesdays.

How truly revolting it was. Illicit lettering on Warbonnets. Green slime everywhere. Here we see an example as BNSF SD75M 8268 leads the 8-991-06 climbing toward the summit of Abo Pass at Mountainair, NM on the Clovis Subdivision on December 7, 1996.
Three MAC's with an empty going after more coal.

Quattro "zucche" della BNSF, capeggiate dalla #8338, una AC44C4, corrono fra le campagne dell'Illinois risalendo verso la valle del Mississippi alla testa di un lungo convoglio intermodale diretto verso la West coast. (18/6/16)

I imagined this as a Great Northern variation. When seeing these things was still fun.

Morning sun illuminates the Mojave Desert as a westbound Z train pulls the grade up Ash Hill on main one at Klondike. Trailing the road power is the recently (cosmetically) restored Santa Fe 5704. The SD45-2 was meticulously returned to its mid-1970s appearance including a return to the striking red, white, and blue scheme used by Santa Fe to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976.
ATSF 5704 was donated by BNSF to the Southern California Railroad Museum in Perris, California.

BNSF B40-8W #521 leads the Eastbound Parachute Local alongside a muddy Colorado River as it approaches the West end of Tunnel siding in De Beque Canyon.
It has just exited out of Beaver Tail Tunnel seen in the background.
The consist also included a pair of ex-GP30's.
Second engine BNSF GP39M #2828 was originally built as the CB&Q 942, then became BN #2219 before being remanufactured at Morrison Knudsen and was numbered BN then BNSF #2828.
Last engine in the consist is BNSF GP39-3 #2549 which was the Santa Fe #1221, 3221, 2721 and then BNSF #2421.
