Ken fashionistas 11 (2017) on the body of green haired BMR1959 Ken

I removed the eye make-up using a wood toothpick dipped in acetone. Used MANY toothpicks. Filled in the eyebrows with dark brown paint. Removed the lipstick with acetone on a Q-tip. Lips were colored with India Red watercolor pencil.

The hair rubbed off with water.

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: Can I just say "Woah!?" I mean, seriously! I remember when these dolls first came out and seeing their pictures online. I remember thinking that they were extremely high end dolls and that we weren't likely to get any because we typically go for play line dolls with their cheaper price tag. Not that I thought we'd "never" have one--we've gotten dolls that were clearly purchased by a collector who wound up at our local flea market for a very reasonable price, but I didn't think we'd get one anytime in the near future...and I certainly wasn't expecting to get Ken! Ken was a really generous gift! He was still in his very fancy box and he arrived here with 165 other dolls in March 2023 (the "Mountains of Monsters Lot"). A very nice lady mailed them to us out of the blue! Ken wasn't the only one still in the box--a Chelsea and Water Play Ken were also still boxed. (The dolls really ranged from so perfect they didn't need anything done to "Where is her other arm?" Mixtures like that are super fun!) Shelly's gasp when she pulled the BMR1959 box out of the shipping box was priceless. (I wish we'd caught it on camera, but sadly we didn't. Though the dolls arrived in the light of day, she was nice and waited for me to come home so we could open them together and, by then, the lighting was terrible and we didn't bother to pull out the camera.) He is REALLY cool. I think of all the BMR dolls, he'd probably have been our favorite if we just looked at an array of them. We love his man bun! I like his coloring too--His skin is very fair, his lips very nude (well, I don't think he wants pink lipstick like Barbie, so I guess it fits that they are so plain-colored), his shaved sides are very light and his rooted hair a bit darker, but if you look close, some of it is a very light brown that matches his eyebrows. He is truly a work of art! Shelly and I have an endless supply of inside jokes, invented characters, etc and we decided to name him Bryan because he channels one of our imaginary characters from long ago. He puts our Barista Ken (who we named Julian), who is our only other Ken with a man bun, to SHAME! He also looks a lot...tougher than Julian. Julian looks like a nice guy who probably has friends at work but would loose in a fight. Bryan looks like the sort of guy no one would mess with! He'd fit in with our Flavas dolls--very street scene! He is SO AMAZING! I'm surprised Shelly put him on my list of "dolls to write on for Flickr" because she likes him just as much, if not more, as I do! We are HUGE fans of Bryan and could not be more grateful to have received him as a gift! He would be so fun in videos and photos...and just like "Wow!" when digging through the Ken container!

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: I love how urban these BMR1959 dolls are! Very street scene! It's a bit like Flavas because the dolls have such realistic street look. However, it's very different because these looks are late 2010s, early 2020s, not early 2000s and the dolls faces are more realistic. Some of the Flavas--most of the guys and Kiyoni--don't look anything like Barbie, but they looks sort of...unapproachable? A little unfriendly? And others, like Tika and Happy D, look basically just like Barbies from their time. However, the BMR dolls look more collectible than regular Barbies and not as animated, but they don't look unapproachable. Our guy, for instance, looks approachable enough to talk to, but doesn't look like someone who'd be easy to bully. Anyway, the styling of their outfits is very urban, though the BMR1959 written on everything isn't something you'd see on an average person on the street. I mean, more like someone at the mall who went to a store with a designer name in really big lettering (someone famous like Tim Gun) and decided to buy literally everything with the designer's name on it. I mean, BMR1959 is on the SANDALS! The good news is, if these dolls wound up floating around naked and their clothes were laying around in a container with them, you'd know they were from this line just by looking at one piece of clothing. The bad news is, because these were more collectible, I don't think we're likely to get them in a flea market type bin anytime soon. I love the two-tone hoodie! It is really original--very oversize, very warm colors, very branded. I love the front pocket! The pants are awesome! I love how bright they are and they are so detailed! The print is nice and I love the white and black contrast on the sides and at the waist. Okay, so they look a little like swim trunks, but not in a bad way. He's also got sandals, which I mentioned before. I'm getting Sunkissed Summer vibes--swim trunks, sandals, and a hoodie. The sunglasses are spectacular! Such a cool look! The only thing I'm a little confused about--the weird fanny pack looking thing that goes across his body. It's unstylish in my opinion. They say the fanny pack was never a good look (sorry Courtney Moore), but I'm even more confused as to why he's wearing it over a shoulder. Maybe it's for his cell phone. Cell phones are HUGE these days and, at some point, my friend Lisa had such a big phone she did buy some sort of carrier for it that, in my opinion, looked like a fanny pack. At any rate, the fanny pack is branded too...I'm thinking that, if this was a designer's logo, they perhaps shouldn't be proud of reinventing a bad fashion faux pas and pretending it was new. ("I call it the over the shoulder phone holder!" "Dude, it's a fanny pack that, for some reason, isn't on his waist." "No, it's my original idea. I spent hours designing it!") I've been making a lot of jokes about fanny packs, so allow me to make one point clear--I don't care about fashion and never understood why mothers got laughed at so much for wearing fanny packs to amusement parks back in the 90s. I think they are a very practical way to carry your money and keys without lugging a huge purse around. And, sometimes, I really do wish I had one for my phone...

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: It popped into Shelly's head that our middle school history teacher would've been HORRIFIED to meet this guy in real life! Or even just see this doll. Shelly remembered him discussing Earring Magic Ken (who was a decade old even back when he was saying this!) and being scandalized. Imagine what he'd have said about a guy with green hair and purple make up! Now, our middle school history teacher...He was a very nice man, but also extremely old fashioned. And he had strong views about professional men's fashion. (I remember that he shopped at Filene's, which was expensive, even though he refused to pay more than thirty cents for a can of corn.) I'm glad that most people in my generation don't view things the same way. Nowadays I see so many adults in the school I work at with tattoos, piercings, colorful hair...because it's just so common now that no one cares! Actually, my friend who I used to work with (she gave us our cat Quasi when she moved!) would love Ken's hair--she has short hair and likes to color it neon colors (though she said she wouldn't do green again because a kid told her it looked like mold). Ken is very striking! Not only is his beautiful green, flocked hair special, but his purple eye make up is really noticeable. And, not only does he have awesome make-up, but he painted his nails too! Not only THAT, but even if you gave him natural colored hair and he wasn't wearing makeup, he would STILL be really cool--because he uses such an interesting head sculpt! He's so unique!

This cool dude is our second BMR1959 Ken. We were given both by a very kind lady who sent us surprise gifts in the mail. Our other BMR1959 Ken was sent to us two years earlier, but by the same person! This dude here was sent to us in March 2025 in what we dubbed the "Camo Clan" lot. (There were a LOT of military themed dolls in there.) Even though we had our other BMR Ken for two years when we got this one, in those two years, his novelty NEVER wore off. These BMR1959 dolls are just SO fancy. Anytime I see him I'm still like, "Whoa!" Therefore, when Shelly pulled this guy out of the box, I figured he was the COOLEST, best done in there...but, after bathing the dolls, dressing them, and just generally bonding with them, I have to say, he's still one of my favorites, but I probably love some of the others just as much! Funnily enough, about a month before we got him, I saw pictures and I thought, "I really want that cool Ken with the green hair." And about a month later, he showed up! He's so special! He and our other BMR1959 Ken are actually from the same line--which is extremely cool!

PERSONAL FUN FACT written by my sister: I feel like this outfit isn't as "fancy" as our other BMR Ken's. I feel like the other outfit is slightly better quality. On the other hand, when standing side by side, these boys don't look out of place together. They are both trendy and dressed for a warm day, but with outerwear in case they get cold. I love how his green overalls are branded!!! So cool! It says, "I am a very expensive Ken doll. Look at me!" I love his orange sneakers! And the lining of his jacket is exquisite! (Did I say his clothes aren't as nice as the other BMR1959 Ken's? Maybe I was wrong.) The jacket is SO detailed, such nice coloring. His purple tank is SO versatile and a nice, soft fabric. What I don't get? Dude, what is with the necklace? It's just hard to take him seriously. First of all, I don't get people who wear big, tacky chains like this in real life. (Isn't it heavy? Isn't it uncomfortable?) But those are usually made of metal (at least Ken's is lighter weight!) It's even TACKIER in white plastic! Not sure what Ken was thinking. The rest of the outfit is fabuloso. But, some people think giant chain necklaces look good...so, maybe Ken knows more about fashion than I do? (Probably, I still have to ask my sister if my clothes match sometimes.)
