I am going to do Tracey Clark's Picture the Holidays again this year. This year it's through Paper Coterie rather than Big Picture Classes.

Today's prompt is "Holding on to Gratitude."

Today I am grateful for the winter sun. The days may be shorter, the trees may be bare, and the colors are all turning to shades of brown, but to me the winter sun makes up for it all. It comes up late enough that I can easily be out for the sunrise. It stays low in the sky all day so even photos at noon are beautifully illuminated. It goes back down early enough that I can catch the sunset before I am busy with the evening rush of dinner and other family obligations. It fills my home with surprising beauty and paints the world in astonishing colors.

Picture the Holidays 2011: Day 1

Notes: A Miners' Hut, Lithgow Valley NSW, c.1880 The Vale of Clwydd Colliery was separated from the rest of Lithgow by a mountain spur, and operated at the edge of a secluded swampy gully. One of its tunnels extended under the swamp, making working conditions extremely unsafe. Living conditions were scarcely more pleasant in spite of the romantic view that this official photograph and a Sydney Mail account suggest :

"The miners' homes are scattered about, some of them in the forest... These habitations are of the rudest description being in many instances composed of logs of wood cemented together with tenacious mud and covered either with canvas or bark. Yet inside these I was astonished to find a snugness which contrasts greatly with the exterior and people seemed quite happy in these rude houses."

Thanksgiving is usually my favorite holiday. I love a holiday that focuses on sharing a meal with people I love rather than on "stuff." This year family feasts are harsh reminders that not everything is perfect in my family. My daughter, who was extremely sick this summer, will still not be able to fully join in, and that makes me really sad. I'm trying to make the best of it though.

We always spend the holiday with my mother's family. This year we will be at her sister's house in New Haven. I have so many fond childhood memories that take place in her house. I adore my aunt and my cousins and their families. My sister and one of my brothers will be coming as well. I am looking forward to seeing everyone!

I'm making the cranberry sauce and brussel sprouts and three pies (pumpkin, pecan, and sour cream raisin).

I'm grateful for family traditions and a wonderful extended family to share them with.

an interesting tidbit (from planespotters): “Incident 7 Feb 2002 at TPE when nose wheel collapsed during maintenance. Aircraft fell on tail when airbag used to raise nose.”

Does not surprise me at all (not the nose wheel collapse)!!!

This is my entry into the Blue Mountains Portraits 2021 exhibition, currently on show at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre in Katoomba.

"In this image of Becky, I wanted to capture and combine two key aspects of Becky’s life, her work with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and as a long-time senior performer with Wagana Aboriginal Dancers. Both of these life paths enable Becky to honour and to be on Country, which as a Kamilaroi woman, is very important to her".

Sometimes all it takes is a few special people to remind us that life is good.

My cousin and his wife visited this weekend. We spent Sunday enjoying the summer -- swimming in the nearby creek, sampling the local ice cream, and then lazing around the picnic table with some watermelon and Vino Verde.

Having guests reminded us to slow down and enjoy our home and the the pleasures this area offers us, and Ed and Kriss are particularly wonderful guests.

Happy Tipsy Tuesday!

I don't often show my commercial work on here, so I though i'd show this image of the recently built "Springwood Community Theatre & Hub" building which I photographed for Blue Mountains City Council earlier in the year. I shoot more and more work like this now and love finding unique angles that come with architectural/commercial style photography. You can see more commercial images here.

The cloud cover this week has been good for photography. It was a bit chilly and windy last night, so that's a sign of things to come.

Notes: Tā moko is the permanent body and face marking by Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. Traditionally it is distinct from tattoo and tatau, in that the skin was carved by uhi (chisels) rather than punctured. This left the skin with grooves, rather than a smooth surface.

Captain James Cook wrote in 1769:

The marks in general are spirals drawn with great nicety and even elegance. One side corresponds with the other. The marks on the body resemble foliage in old chased ornaments, convolutions of filigree work, but in these they have such a luxury of forms that of a hundred which at first appeared exactly the same no two were formed alike on close examination.

The Tohunga tā moko (or tattooists) were considered tapu, or exceptionally inviolable and sacred.

It was a rainy cold damp night in the city...but that always makes for the best moody pics! My sister and I went to the BMCC (this is a shot from the entrance doors looking out into the plaza) to watch a live jazz performance which was very cool. They were so enraptured and into their music and they were all quite talented!!
