A cool fact about Blue Jays from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology: "The pigment in Blue Jay feathers is melanin, which is brown. The blue color is caused by scattering light through modified cells on the surface of the feather barbs."

One of the gorgeous critters I came across on my hike at Rattray Marsh. I carried seeds with me to place wherever in the hopes of getting a shot of any bird and this bluejay was obliging. The hikes will end soon... there's an ice storm coming this weekend.

No, his name is not peanut, and neither he nor the peanuts are falling. It just happened to be a beautiful fall morning with some wonderful light and I decided to take advantage of his attraction to peanuts by preserving this moment on camera.
Trying to enjoy fall. Best done by not lingering on the fact that winter is just around the corner. Living in the moment springs to mind. This is one of those moments to be cherished and lived in for a long time after the moment has passed. My interpretation of living in the moment. Another great moment to live in would be drinking moonshine on Copperhead Road. Maybe even on a beautiful fall morning …

Knowing that I was shipping my camera off today to be cleaned and calibrated, I had to get out yesterday.
Being "camera-less" for the next few weeks brings about an uneasy feeling of dread...or maybe it's just the holidays!
Bluejays love corn. They are so friendly and funny. This is one of this years babies and is learning very quickly how hard life can be for them. The sharp shinned hawks that come in every autumn have arrived and spend a good portion of the day hunting the Jays. Fortunately the Jays are smart, fast and quick and they work together to try to avoid being dinner.
