Willie has agility training each morning at the beach. He hops over the rocks, learning that barnacles help with grip and seaweed and wetness lead to tumbles. His tail wags the whole time, and he gets stronger every day. He's not so crazy about the pauses to take pictures.
Little did we know, that the blue heeler puppy we thought we were getting is actually turning out to be a rabbit. We still want him.
When I flew into Sitka yesterday morning, I saw that all of the higher peaks were above the clouds. So Willie and I set out in the rain to climb Bear Mountain.
We were in the clouds almost the entire way, and I thought maybe the clouds had thickened up and we would not see blue sky at all. But after experiencing the most disorienting whiteout I've ever seen in thick fog over a snowfield, we ascended into hot sun and blue sky. Willie played mountain goat, running back and forth on the steep ridge, peering off into the abyss on the other side.

Willie has enjoyed learning about muskegs. He learned that muskeg holes are deeper than they first appear, which led to his first bath. Then he learned that bears like to hang out near this muskeg. But he was more afraid of the loud seagulls eating the remains of dead salmon, than the big bears eating live salmon.
Willie was wet after his first short day of search and rescue training. It doesn't bother him as much as it looks like in the picture.
Willie climbed his first mountain all by himself this weekend. I thought I'd have to help him a little bit, but he's big enough to get up and over everything himself now. He loved digging in the snow and racing around in the wide open places.
Willie has two characteristics that we love: His ears are floppy, and he folds his paws under in a way that makes us think he is a rabbit. His ears bounce with every step he takes, and they don't stop moving until a few seconds after he stops. These are both characteristics that will probably last well past the puppy stage, perhaps his whole life.
Willie sleeps in a crate, and stays in his crate any time we can't supervise him directly. He stays happier, because he does not get into trouble chewing things like power cords and shoes. Also, it's a safe and comfortable space for him. He took to it quickly, as you can see here!
The back of the crate is blocked off, giving him just enough room to stand up and turn around. This discourages him from peeing and pooping in one end of the crate and sleeping in the other end, which makes it much easier to housebreak him. He had a few accidents the first week, but has been quite good since then. I had no idea housebreaking a puppy could be so simple.
Our new blue heeler puppy, nestled into its mom's forelegs. It's the runt, but it will climb higher than any of its siblings, I am sure.
Willie has just learned to make his first chew toy squeak without our help. He has to get his mouth all the way around the toy, and press his face into the floor as he squeezes it. It's pretty funny to watch him go at it!

Ida holding Willie, our 3-week-old blue heeler puppy. Just a few more weeks until we get to take him home! He's cool because his tail is still intact. He's also cool because of the brown spots above his just-opening eyes.
Willie trots along quite well now. We are very happy to have kept his tail, going against the American trend.

We built a flirt pole for Willie today. He loves it, and when he grabs the toy it feels like a good day of fishing.
