Yay! Completely carved. He lost his little "signals" coming out of his antenna. Told you it was a bit too easy to cut.

The block is now all carved, here we roll on first ink for transferring this image to color blocks.

One man's trash is another man's treasure. "DESERT ISLAND", Tugboat Printshop's latest woodcut release, reimagines a classic desert island. Though a desert island would suggest a lack of amenities, this island is brimming with them. Abandoned mattresses, coolers, milk jugs, and more! A castaway's paradise of knick knacks for refashioning. All greatly useful to a shipwrecked MacGyver! A wonderance of excess becomes a ray of hope scenario.

We're happy to report that today, "DESERT ISLAND" begins its pre-order!

Pre-ordering reserves a limited edition copy of "DESERT ISLAND" for delivery when the color print is completed. For complete details about purchasing the "DESERT ISLAND" woodcut, please visit OUR SHOP! tugboatprintshop.com/woodcut_desertisland.htm

Chinese lantern, linocut, three blocks on Hahnemühle Ingres paper, 50 x 50 cm.

There are four types of tapir; this linocut is of a Malayan tapir, but this one is a baby. Tapirs always look very dapper, if improbable, in their black and white coat. The adults with their white saddles look like an aardvark crossed with an elephant, wearing a tuxedo (as can be seen in my 'Malayan Tapir' linocut). The babies have a delightful pattern of what spots and stripes, and like most baby mammals, come complete with big round eyes, and disproportionately big feet.

The Malayan Tapir (Tapirus indicus), also called the Asian Tapir, is the largest of the four species of tapir and the only one native to Asia. The Malayan Tapir was once found throughout the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Vietnam. Sadly, like other tapirs, it is now endangered due to deforestation. These were always one of my favorite animals to visit at the zoo and hope that they not only survive, but flourish in the future.

This lino block print is one of an edition of 12 printed on Japanese kozo, or mulberry paper 21 cm by 20 cm (8.3 inches by 7.9 inches).

Block prints from the studio of master craftsman Ishmail-bhai of Ajrakpur, near Bhuj. Was interesting got be shown the indigo dyeing process in his backyard. His wife makes the best rotis EVER – as verified by others who have been lucky enogh to sample them! :-)

Excerpt:

Upcycling reduces substantial amount of waste and industrial production. Besides being a boon to environment, its wallet friendly as well, as we shop less. I find it much more satisfying than just ‘creating’ anything new because in upcycling, we are reinventing and repurposing an old item that may have outlasted its purpose or usability. When we repurpose it, we are giving it a new lease of life and meaning…
