Block 11 :: by Fat Quarterly

I missed at step in this block and didn't trim my HSTs when I should have, so my seams don't match up. I'm going to try to live with it and see what it looks like once I put all the blocks together.

I love the block though - just wish I'd read the instructions properly :)

Granite blocks that were shipped in from all over the world await transport to the consignees in Europe

Is it any wonder that a geometer loves quilt blocks? These blocks were all pieced by hand and measure 12 inches square plus a seam allowance.

This Australian Cattle Dog ran to the head of this break-away steer to cut off his advance away from the herd. The dog did this without using biting as a tool. The flying block proved to be very effective.

Hollow block cement homes are the most common building method used today as they are hold up well to typhoons and earthquakes.

this one was trickier than it looked :)

Prototype 4x4 block for the matrix 8x16 with color disks. This way I can use colored discs with the pic and place robot. The color of the discs is displayed on the neo-pixel matrix. There is still a lot of work to be done for the supply and removal of the color discs. With an I2C color detector, I should be able to sort them and put them on the right place.

As shown in the photo, you can transport the small discs quite easily, even vertically. This is because internally they contain a small neodym magnet.

My pic and place header has already been modified to take these discs and place them in the 8x16 matrix. With RoboPro, I can make the color drawing. For the pixel color there is a choice of 8 predefined colors.

For her month in Bee Unique Bee Knotty Terrie is making a snowman-themed quilt. She sent a snowman fabric along with a red print and a white-on-white print and asked for a traditional block.

The block is "Commencement" from "Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Volume 3." This is the first time I've ever done set-in seams. It took a long time and a few re-sewings but I did eventually get it. It's definitely not a fast technique. Luckily I really like the resulting block!

371 Victoria Street, Kamloops, BC.

This is one of Kamloops’ finest downtown brick business blocks. It was built in 1914 by G.W. & R. Godman as an office and commercial building. A few years previous, the Ellis family had moved to Kamloops from San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. The father, W.J. Ellis, opened a garage and machine shop on Lorne Street, which remained in business until 1982. One of the sons, W.O. Ellis, became a pharmacist and in 1917 formed a partnership with A. Galloway. They opened an office and pharmacy on the ground floor of the Godmans’ block.

The Galloway-Ellis drugstore continued in operation on this site under various owners until 1994. The name of the business block was changed to Ellis Block in 1951 when W.O. Ellis bought the building.

This block was built by Kamloops contractors, Johnston & Gill using their own signature bricks. It is a two-storey building, with a basement. On the east side, the main entrance is flanked by two large granite Doric columns. Step back to appreciate the brick frieze and ornamental parapet along the top edge of the building.

These are all the pieces that go into making the Robot designed by Jess Hutch from her booklet Unusual Toys to Knit. I'm giving this fellow to my friend for xmas. Hopefully I'll have him all sewn up tonight! You can see my ghetto blocking style... it's a piece of cardboard from a box with lines dawn on it in permanent marker. I really need a blocking board! blogged

If the sun comes out long enough I might just put the parasol up - here's hoping.

These blocks are a bit of a mystery. They surfaced in a corner of a high-school math storage closet, where they hadn't been disturbed for years. Each wooden block has a binary number associated. The inscriptions in the small boxes are in Asian script, unknown type, possibly Korean.

Two more blocks - yellow-green (greenish-yellow?) and black. They are 16-inch blocks.

The plan is to use Connie (Freemotion by the River's) QAYG tutorial for finishing them off www.conniekresin.com/2013/03/qayg-tutorial-ra

srshews asked for a blue, red and turquoise/teal block. I always love making blocks in this colour combination and I really love the print fabric from Kate Spain's "Fandango" line that I included in this block.

The design is inspired by the book "Vivacious Curvy Quilts" by Dianne S. Hire and I modified her techinque by using my Curve Master Presser Foot (which works as advertised, I am happy to report -- no pinning required!)
