Wooden block set by Schowanek, marked as made in the U.S. Zone, Germany, which dates the design of the label to pre-1950.

This is a small set, the box size is approx. 70 x 80 mm, and the price label shows it was sold in Harrods for 4/6.

The company originated in the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia. After the Second World War the factory was nationalised and continued to produce wooden toys in a similar style. The Schoanek company re-established itself firstly in Austria, and then in the western part of Germany.

An old office building now part of a new block. I have made some minor changes like a more magnificent entrance in tarnished copper. It is art deco inspired after all. I just wish it had a suitable print. It also has two ground levels with a long stair to the upper level. Each step is approximately one quarter of a plate.

A little while ago Simon Pickard (aka brickspartan) from Blocks magazine approached me about doing a feature article on me (as part of a series of AFOL feature articles). I was chuffed and flattered for the recognition (and a little intimidated at the same time!) Simon and I had a great time during the interview and I'm really pleased with how well Simon put together this feature.

Its available in UK stockists WH Smith, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, and others(?). I believe its carried by Barnes and Noble in the US and available globally in digital form from the iTunes Newsstand app.

Blocks is a great read with high quality content and production. That should not be come as a surprise since most of the editorial team are mostly AFOLs.

This is a sheet for the bed that was hanging out on the clothes line. When I saw the light on it, I was keen to take a pic to see how it would turn out.

The sun rises over Mansion Beach at Block Island, October 13, 2021.

After a nice Tuesday, storms started in the evening and raged across north Alabama. We were without power or phone service/signal for about 18 hours. We had no idea what was going on other than a few text messages from my sister that I did manage to get, and then- just the tornado warning sirens going off from time to time. Not a great way to spend the night. This was a blockage on one end of our road- tree after tree on the road, and downed power lines in the ditches! I think we had to back up for 1/2 a mile! I had been terrified earlier, but for Ken having to back down the steep road in the dark- well, thank goodness for his patience and the modern technology of the backup camera!

Not yet quilted. I snuk some orange in this time....Loving it!

Another photograph that looks like the drawings I always wanted to make. I just printed this huge (about 2 feet wide) and it looks amazing. I have it hanging on my wall.

Blocks magazine arrived in Cremona!!

I loved the Charise's basket, then I decided decrease the pattern to sew a bitty for Kathy! This pattern if inspired for the Kumiko Fujita's 318 Patchwork Patterns, the book I loooooooove!

And As the Charises' choice catch me, I tried to use the sewing themes from Suzuko Koseki's cotton print!

I'm in love with this tiny basket.

Ah! Ana Catharina, my teenager daughter gave me the idea to stitch the piece of thread out to the basket, and I think this made a huge difference! It turn the bitty more delicate, besides of course the tiny pins in the pincushion, that I sewed with metallic silver thread !! :))))

A random block in downtown Denver, where I think I like the mix of the chaotic city surrounding the regular repeating pattern of the tower block. Both noisy and regulated at the same time.

I quite liked Denver as a city when we stayed there for a few days as Laura was speaking at the OSHWA Summit that year, but I don't really have many photos of it to reflect why. I suspect I find it hard to capture the the subtle space between large pictures like this one and the close up detail shots, and there in lies the personable space that makes a place good.
