Rising 1000ft above sea level, Alport Heights is the first large hill or mini mountain of the Southern Pennines. On clear days you can see the Wrekin and even the Welsh mountains...plus it’s free to park and access and no café or ice cream vans to blight the views.

There remain areas of Over The Rhine that have not been gentrified. Even the remains of a pay phone on the right. Cincinnati.

Smoke from the wildfires continues to challenge our ability to breathe...

I dream a world where man

No other man will scorn,

Where love will bless the earth

And peace its paths adorn

I dream a world where all

Will know sweet freedom's way,

Where greed no longer saps the soul

Nor avarice blights our day.

A world I dream where black or white,

Whatever race you be,

Will share the bounties of the earth

And every man is free,

Where wretchedness will hang its head

And joy, like a pearl,

Attends the needs of all mankind-

Of such I dream, my world!

A sunnier, warmer day...taken at Swanscombe Peninsula, a piece of land poking into the River Thames between Northfleet and Greenhithe. It remains blighted by the fictitious "London Resort" scam; some moneybags making silly planning applications to build an enormous theme park, but never getting anywhere...money laundering ? One wonders. I can see these suited bloviators drooling uncontrollably as they talk endlessly about the meaningless despoiling of land for PROFIT and specious prestige...

Daisies are far more pleasant and necessary, of course, and there can never be too many of them.

A later visit, this year, to see the Gannets at Bempton Cliffs RSPB. A lot of the birds had left and those remaining had nearly fully grown young. Our trip was blighted by thousands of Beetles which were everywhere and very annoying but it was lovely to see these graceful birds again. Half a million sea birds nest on the towering chalk cliffs at Bempton in Yorkshire every year.

The odds of this building still looking "this good" are very slim...

America Black Bear of North Carolina

There are three species of bears in North America—the Polar Bear, Brown Bear (Grizzly), and Black Bear. The Black Bear is the only species found in North Carolina or anywhere in the eastern United States and is an important part of our cultural, historical and natural heritage.

In North Carolina, the Black Bear is usually black with a brown muzzle and sometimes a white patch on its chest. Bears have five toes on each foot, with sharp curved claws that help them climb trees and feed on insects and grubs in decaying logs. Black Bears rely mostly on their sense of smell and hearing due to their average (similar to humans’) eyesight, but are adept at climbing, running, swimming and digging. They can run as fast as 35 miles per hour!

Before Europeans came to the New World, Black Bears lived in all forested regions of North America and were abundant in North Carolina. However, Black Bears were often killed by early settlers to protect their families, crops and livestock. In time, bears across the state were also impacted by habitat loss from agricultural development and clear-cutting. By the mid-1900s, bears were only found in the most remote mountains and coastal swamps of our state. Then in the 1920s, the American chestnut blight (a tree-killing fungus) hit the Mountain Region, destroying the most important nut-producing tree for bears. As a result, bear populations suffered.

However, thanks to science-based management and bear sanctuaries, Black Bears have made a remarkable recovery in population and range. Black Bear expansion has occurred naturally as bears have moved into suitable habitats. As of 2012, there were approximately 17,000 bears in the state, occupying 61% of the state’s total land area.

The former American Motors Headquarters.

Detroit, MI.

Building was originally established by Kelvinator Motors (then partnered with Nash Motors) in 1927, Nash-Kelvinator merged with Hudson Motors forming. American Motors in 1954. This building remained in operation until its acquisition from Chrysler Corporation in 1987 and remained in business until 2009. There has been recent talks on revitalizing the building, but time will only tell at this point...

In the early 90's this area of Detroit, Rivertown, was booming. A half dozen bars, restaurants, etc . The rumors started floating around that Detroit was going to get Casinos and that they might be in this area. A lot of the bars and industrial buildings were bought up on the cheap before the official announcement of the locations of the Casinos. It ended up not being in this area, resulting in dozens of abandoned buildings sitting for 20+ years. In recent years a lot of the buildings have been demolished and really nice lofts and apartments have been built here, along with a few restaurants and a brewery/bar.

This is in the Brush Park area of Detroit. I haven't been there in awhile, I don't know if it is even still standing. Thanks so much everyone, this one just made Explore!
