In truth, this started out as a kind of 3D doodle. At it's core, this is just a hollowed out cube, with a bunch of modifiers: I elongated a cube, removed two sides, added a solidify mod (to give the remaining faces some thickness), two Array mods (to create a wall of these cubes), a Curve Mod (to create the arc), a couple of subsurf mods (because why not?), and another couple of array mods (to create the radial pattern that defines the layered dome shape). This was not the most efficient scene. It took an unreasonably long time to render (15+ hours), even for the size of the image. Plus, the way I used the mods eliminates this scene from being shown from any other angle, without killing the illusion of a dome. In reality, when viewed from a different location (from outside of this inner curve), this looks a bit like a mushroom cloud. I really like the architectural effect & may try this again, but better.

Soviet 20-ton military manned space station, desined for photo and radio intelligence. It was equipped with several cameras, including infrared one and 1 meter camera "Agat-1". It also carried 23mm autocannon, which was tested in space just before deorbiting. It was the first and the only case of shooting in space. First concept supposed to use heavy cargo spacecraft TKS for resupply and crew rotation, but Soyuz was used instead. However, TKS was launched several times later uncrewed. Also ISS module Zarya is based on it.
Hull of unfinished Almaz stations (development of equipment was slow) were used for first "civil" space station DOS-1. Both Almaz and DOS series were called Salyut for press.

Two men in a small cozy pub in the corner were talking about something. One of them, middle-aged dark haired man in the business suit, took a huge folder with papers and put it on table. The second one, who looked tired a bit, put on his glasses and began to read documents. He looked surprised and a strange smile appeared on his wrinkled fase.
āSir Stevenson, I donāt understand. This caseā¦ Itās not my profile, ā elderly man talked indignantly. ā You could find more competent specialist in this area. There are many psychiatrists, who studied effect of ACV** neurointerface on a pilot.
āThatās why Iāve chosen you, doctor Lambert, ā businessman fetched a sigh. ā They see nothing but influence of the machine. They even donāt try to find if the patient was ill before the incident or not.
āSo, Youāre trying to avoid your responsibility for this destructive tragedy. I see something is hidden here, ā Lambert said this in such intonation, that he wasnāt glad to have any relation to this deal. ā At first, can you explain me, why this mechanic with dark past took part in testing this prototype?
āYou should understand, MechInd has some difficulties now, ā Stevenson started to excuse away, it seemed he hided something. ā Some generals support MechInd, but thatās not enough. We are out of money. The idea of making fourth generation ACV wasnāt supported by parliament, so none of big corporations wants to invest in this project. Thatās why we havenāt got enough people to work and provide security. Our only pilot was slightly injured in a car accident. Several simple checkouts at the testing field were planed that day. Just walking from one marked point to another. And then one mechanic offered his help. He could drive mech enough to do tests. Yes, that was Paul Lebel, who made all this mess.
āBut how could he drive this vehicle? Does it require huge training? Some people say thatās as easy as computer game, but I donāt believe that. Or am I wrong? And was it so difficult to find a better certified person? ā Doctor continued asking.
āThatās half-true. Interface of modern ACV is simple and obvious, computer can correct even rude mistakes and there are build-in training programs and hints. So if you just want to have a walk at your backyard in ACV, it will take couple of hours or even less to study this. As for our problem, there are so many insane rumors about development of neurointerface. As you know, first generation had serious problems at the beginning. Pilots had hallucinations, delirium after long-time using ACV. It was some kind of addiction to neurointerface. Some of them became mad. It took much time to fix this problem. But it defiantly was fixed. And some time ago new rumors appeared that new ones have the same issue. So, there were not many people who wanted to be test pilot.
āJust rumors?!! ā Lambert shouted as loud as he could, so his potential employer flinched. ā I donāt see rumors. I see facts. Lebel became insane when he was driving ACV. It wasnāt in the middle of battle. It was calm sunny day. Nothing should worry him. It could be only fault of machine. And you call that rumor?
āDoctor, it seems you didnāt read all the materials, ā Stevenson said it calmly and pointed one more folder. ā Here is Lebelās dossier. We havenāt got much information.
Paul Lebel. Name could be false. Age about 20. Born in France. In 2007 he and 11 more children were kidnapped by Islamic terrorists and transported to Afghanistan. He spent there about a mount, after that camp was attacked by another radical group and he could run away. Certain Farid Ursa sheltered him. Two years later Farid was killed by robbers and Lebel joined local guerrillas. He took part in civil war when he was 12 (may be 10). In 2017 he was found injured in the cockpit of destroyed ACV by peacemaker forces. Then he was sent back to France to childrenās community. In 2018 Lebel went to British Greece and started to work for MechInd.
āWell, interesting story. So you are looking for connection between his hard childhood and this incident? And new neurointerface isnāt a reason? ā Looks like new information made Lambert calm.
āIndeed.
āThatās possible, but I need to talk with Paul to be sure.
āIām afraid itās impossible, ā Stevenson objected. ā Journalists somehow find out some information about his location and a huge crowd appeared near hospital. They wanted revenge. Now Lebel is missing. He escaped from hospital. Or he was kidnapped. We are trying to find him, but there are still no results.
āThatās strange. Something isnāt clear here. Prototype also disappeared, am I right? ā doctor was suspicious.
āItās debris. But sometimes just human mistakes, laziness and stupidity are better explanation than conspiracy. However, Colonel McMillan doesnāt think so. You can talk about this with him if you want. It was a total bedlam just after the incident, nobody knew what to do. We know our competitors spied on our developments. Looks like, they stole debris of Hexham.
āAnd whatās special in this ACV?
āEverything! Quasi-organic muscles, which can self-repair. Ordinary electro-muscles degrade after some time. Their fibers tear due to stress. Plus combat damage. So muscles should be replaced from time to time. And theyāre expensive. New ones can āhealā themselves. Bio computer based AI. Just prototype, but itās a huge step forward, ā there was pride in Stevensonās words. ā Specialist say that one such ACV can fight against 3-5 previous generation vehicles.
āLooks like itās very, very expensive. So, why you didnāt kept this in secret?
āAs I said, itās matter of finances. Also most people think this project has no future. It can be closed at any moment.
āThis incident is very usable for your competitors, donāt you think?

[ā¦] Thatās an example of criminal negligence. Nobody should give access for such dangerous vehicle without any education. Moreover, the pilot could have psychical illness. And company could find this if they check their stuff better. [ā¦] Pilotās behavior changed, he started responding not clearly. Dispatcher had to notice it. Then the pilot said about hallucinations. But the tests were not interrupted. [ā¦] The pilot became insane; he didnāt understand what he was doing. He started to crush everything he saw. An attempt to stop this made him even angrier. [ā¦] At the train station he attacked British military forces. 3 APC, 2 ACV and one tank were destroyed. During battle a shell hit train full of toxic chemicals. Fire was started. Then it exploded. An hour later poisonous cloud covered Thessaloniki. Dozens people died, about 1000 were heavily poisoned. [ā¦] Hexham was seriously damaged during the battle. Pilot walked 15 miles before ACV shouted down. Thatās amazing, but he wasnāt injured. However, his mind was totally broken. He almost nipped off nose of an officer, when British solders tried to arrest him. [ā¦]
āHeh, Lebel is a remarkable person, you know, ā Doctor was really interested. ā Iām not a military expert, but thatās amazing. I know new generation ACV and so on. But he has to be genius to do these things. He had no experience in driving that particular vehicle. Moreover, that was just a prototype without weapon and some systems, am I right? And he alone blew up those tanks and ACVs. It wasnāt just talent. He had to have huge combat experience! Lebel could make fantastic career in British forces. Instead, he is badly paid worker in colony. Maybe he hates all this military stuff because of his childhood. But he works with APCs! I donāt understand!
āAll employees say that mechs were his passion. However, he didnāt communicate much with other staff. Most information came from certain Mary Leonis, his friend. Or girl-friend. Even she didnāt know Paul well. But there can be some difficulties. Sheās underage, so if you want meet her, you must reach an agreement with her parents. And they areā¦ difficult persons.
āSo, thatās a private investigation. Authorities donāt want to interfere.
āYes. You know the situation. Central government thinks thatās problems of colony. Locals donāt want this headache at all. And even those who support separatists are glad. Thatās an occasion to call Britain evil empire one more time. So nobody wants it to be official.
āAnd nobody cares about the victims. Thatās sad. I think I will help you.
*In 2019 Greece is still divided. After WWII Greece is colony of the Great Britain. At the beginning of XXI century the revolution happened. Half or Greece became independent. British Greece is still colony. Itās capital is Thessaloniki.
** ACV ā Anthropomorphic Combat Vehicle. Human-like mech. Uses direct link between pilot and machine, called neurointerface for better synchronization and finer and faster control.

I spent a bit of time working to make each apartment unit and the sheets of fabric look unique, so there would not be a very discernible pattern in the textures, colors, and motion. Then, while trying to add an atmospheric effect to emulate heavy pollution, I accidentally got this blurred effect, I found I quite liked it - though the effect does obliterate much of the detail I worked so hard to incorporate. Particularly ironic, since I spent a ton of time getting the fabric sheets to blow in the wind in a non-uniform way. Let me tell you, rendering a couple of hundred moving pieces of fabric on an image this size is no small chore, even on a relatively beefed up computer.
Still, I am glad for all the work, as I learned a couple of new techniques I can use down the road. I may even be able to reuse the apartment blocks again.
There are 78 apartment units between the two towers and about 546 fabric sheets - though you cannot see them all. Part of the process was to create 7 pieces of fabric hanging on the railing of each apartment, but with a material that not only had random hue, saturation and value, but with a randomized visibility. That was to save me the trouble of having to manually place each one so it looked random.

Never thought I'd do a Cyberpunk build (I'm much more of a Deus Ex fellow), but here we are. This leans pretty heavily on the initial Manticore concepts by Ben Andrews - but any further forays into Cyberpunk would certainly have more of a personal touch.
A build like this, with articulated engine mounts, functional hatchwork, and a detailed interior, presents many opportunities for animated presentation work - but I can only carve out so much time per project. Make sure to head over to gman's profile to see what ultimately comes of this. ;)
