The River Gipping is the source river for the River Orwell in the county of Suffolk in East Anglia, England, which is named from the village of Gipping, and which gave its name to the former Gipping Rural District. The name is unrelated to the name of Ipswich. although the County Town takes its name from Gippeswic. It rises near Mendlesham Green and flows in a south-westerly direction to reach Stowmarket. From there it flows towards the south or south east, passing through Needham Market and a number of villages to reach Ipswich, where it becomes the Orwell.

The river has supplied power to a number of watermills, several of which are still standing. None is operational, although the mill at Baylham retains most of its machinery, and is the only complete mill on the river.

St Mary's church sits on the western fringe of the village of Little Blakenham and is every bit the picturesque rural church, set as it is amidst the trees within a delightfully leafy churchyard. It is not a grand building, a simple chancel, aisleless nave and tower but it is a place of great charm.

Within an atmosphere of calm and simplicity reigns, and there is no structural division between nave and chancel. The latter is adorned with a remarkable pair of large 13th century niches flanking the east window lancets, so large they perhaps more likely framed painted rather than sculpted images before the Reformation swept such things away. Certainly this church would have once been painted as most were with vibrant imagery, and a taste of this can still be found within the splays of a window on the north side which contains two figures (one St John the Baptist, the other a female saint holding a dove) but these have been so heavily over-painted by Victorian restorers that we can only guess to what degree they follow the original design, but the overall treatment suggests they at least echo the original in outline though the identities of the figures may have been different (with the Annunciation suggested as the original subject).

This is a beautiful and peaceful place, it is normally kept locked outside of services but a key may be sought.

The opportunities to capture Class 321's north of Ipswich have always been infrequent, with the morning peak service from Stowmarket to London Liverpool Street being an ideal opportunity. One of several lovely little churches in the hills to the west of Ipswich. Not much has happened here for a while, although it appears to be coming back to life thanks to the energy of the benefice's new priest in charge.

I came out of the cinema in Ipswich and looking on OTT maps noticed that this was already approaching Diss - WTF! I then made the mistake of cutting through the middle of Ipswich to get to Great Blakenham, encountering roadworks in profusion - it is not just Colchester plagued with them at the moment! This had already passed Stowmarket by the time I set up my ladder here so I didn't have long to wait for the very clean Bluebird on the loaded condensate from North Walsham.

Incidentally the very observant will notice from the EXIF data I had the exposure set all wrong - I didn't notice until the fourth train! Fortunately not a problem in digital though.

After already bagging a shot of this working passing through Great Blakenham earlier that morning, it was a dash back down the A12 to Church lane L/C Margaretting to get my second chance of the morning with literally seconds to spare!
