8th June 2024

Wye Downs Kent

Ten days in Charing in a converted cart shed found via AirBNB sounded a very attractive proposition so off we went. The weather wasn’t kind to us cool with a stiff breeze most of the time so we saw fewer dragonflies and butterflies that expected, only about half a dozen blues all week, Nonetheless we enjoyed the break especially days at Scotney and Sissinghurst, both delightful places.

Our last full day, and the weather was no kinder, another stiff breeze high up on the crest of the South Downs, with glorious views as far as Dungeness.

A good selection of orchids and other chalk-grassland plants on the slopes above the Devil’s Kneading Trough, probably a lot more if I’d had the stamina to battle against the wind. I’m afraid the “New Flying Horse” in Wye village won out in the end.

Anthyllis tetraphylla / Tripodion tetraphyllum

She pissed on herself shortly after.
