Tattoo by Denise de la Cerda. Wearer- Mark Ciecko (continued). As the pattern moves onto Mark's pectoral, it becomes more Victorian, design elements having been snatched from leaves, buds, and flowers. Hand of Glory Tattoo, Brooklyn, 2006.
My wife was fond of sewing; this is the last piece she worked on. After she died my daughter finished it.

Not really my scene, but part of the challenge!

Well, mostly. There is also a border (I'll do it all at the same time, once the other side is done) and there are a few spots of colorwork. I'm not thrilled with the included colors - the red is too tomato, the green is too dark, the yellow is atrocious, something is wrong with the blue. So I'll be picking out new colors for that portion (same colors, different hues) but I've got time. Excited to be (finally) working on the other side.
I'm still super enjoying this project and very much looking forward to having the completed object hanging on the wall.

blackwork piece 7"x10" hand embroidered
For the Halloween opening at Redux
Opens Oct. 1st.
(Design is based on The Ossuary by Matthäus Merian. Variations of the original design were done by too many artists to list here, but arguably the most recognizable versions came from Emmanuel Büchel, Hans Holbien, Jacques-Antony Chovin, and Hieronymus Hess.)
My first blackwork (ish) piece.
Comedian Brian Posehn is coming to town and the local comedy magazine I write for interviewed him (Red Shtick Magazine, look for them online at redshtickmagazine.com). The staff was asked to provide questions for him. Mine was "What is a favorite quote of yours you'd love to see cross stitched?" This is for him. My first piece made specifically for someone of the famous variety. I am sorta neated out by this.
I've finally finished the present for my mother. It's taken forever and that whole journey has been blogged about here.

I have always had a fascination with tattoo sleeves and in particular blackwork designs. I have a background in electronics and design so this is the design we came up with. This is also my first tattoo which was rather daunting to begin with.
Blackwork decorative detail on the verandah posts of a house, from the Art Deco era (I think), in Gordon, New South Wales.
Simple and elegant. And eye-catching.

Started working on this again recently. The original layout I'd planned isn't possible (when I measured, I didn't take into account that the fabric is cut a little off grain, and it won't all fit with enough room left around the edges) but I've regrouped and started working at it again. This third section might be the last one, but I might do some going in the opposite direction above these ones.
