Many of us learn life's lessons from our fathers or father figures. I was lucky to have not only that but a dad that taught me a little bit about this railfan stuff, arranged for me to have an SLR before I was a teenager, and more importantly have the patience to make sure I understood how to use it and drag me around. I'm going to miss our conversations about the places I go and pictures I take and hearing about how the railroad was when he still worked for the Nickel Plate Road in the 50's. I was happy for the time to tell him that before he passed on Independence Day.

On this day in August 1968, we had gone over to Kona, North Carolina where the Yancey RR connected with the Clinchfield. The Yancey and predecessor Black Mountain were at least Dad's second favorite railroad and he later published a history of the Black Mountain. We walked down the Clinchfield from the depot and across the iron bridge with wooden piers, and then down to the river. The view from the rocks wasn't quite wide enough for Dad so he got his toes in the Toe River. The picture was kind of a bust because the Clinchfield didn't have any cars for them to bring back but it was a good day for memories.

Death Valley, California

My visit to Death Valley that year started with a rain that lasted the entire drive from Las Vegas to Furnace Creek. As the storm cleared I drove towards Badwater, stopping several times, including once to photograph the clouds clearing from the Black Mountains.

Some lovely and colourful yellow Canola flowers near the Black mountains of England and Wales.

Earlier in the week I posted a square crop of this composition - this is the same view but a 16:9 crop. Not sure which I prefer? I guess both work. Despite the subdued light and colours I like this. Guess that is what it is all about! Thanks for looking.

A walk around Usk Reservoir on Bank Holiday Monday in the Brecon Beacons National Park. No great light but the cloud coming down over the mountains added a bit of moodiness. Looking across to the Black Mountain across the reservoir.

A view across a fence at Gilwern to the green Vale of Grwyney, with the Black Mountains and the summit of Pen y Gadair Fawr ('top of the big chair') in the distance.

No Starbucks in sight! Nice!

Coming down to Llanthony there was a mini grove of boxwood trees, and if you looked hard in the bracken remains of walls and possibly terraces. Remains of a Priory garden?

Standing on Dante’s View just after sunset, we look south along the western side of the Black Mountains with a view of the salt flat below and the eastern side of the Panamint Mountains.

This hulking canyon arch is pretty cool. I have to wonder, though, how much longer it will be before it comes crashing down. There are cracks and fissures on and around the arch and the adjacent rock walls, and with the temperature extremes they get in Death Valley, it seems like it's only a matter of time before something gives way. That or an earthquake will spell the end of this Natural Bridge. I give it 10 years, max.

Black Mountain is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named for the old train stop at the Black Mountain Depot and is located at the southern end of the Black Mountain range of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Southern Appalachians.

Black Mountain in its present form was incorporated in 1893. The first recorded inhabitants of the area were the Cherokee. A road was built through the area in 1850 and a railroad followed in 1879.

The downtown area has many eclectic shops, attracting seasonal tourism, a main staple of the local economy. There are also many quaint bed and breakfasts. The town is near several Christian retreat areas including Ridgecrest and Montreat Conference Center.

Black Mountain College was formerly located within the town limits, but the Black Mountain College Museum and Arts Center, dedicated to the experimental educational institution's history, is now located in downtown Asheville. Black Mountain is also the site of the Swannanoa Valley Museum. The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is located down the street from the museum. In 2002 the community raised 1.2 million dollars to buy the old Town Hall and convert it into the Art Center.
