James Lawson. When James Lawson and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. met in 1957, King urged Lawson to move to the South and begin teaching nonviolence on a large scale. Later that year, Lawson transferred to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and organized workshops on nonviolence for community members and students at Vanderbilt and the city’s four black colleges. In March 1960, Vanderbilt expelled Lawson because of his involvement with Nashville’s desegregation movement. As a black woman, I believe that white privilege is both due to a lack of awareness and an act of conscious choices. Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, “white privilege” referred to legal and systemic advantages given to white people such as the right to vote and the right to buy a house in the neighborhood of choice.
.
.
Today, legislative bodies, corporate leaders and educators are still disproportionately white and often make conscious choices (laws, hiring practices, discipline procedures) that keep this cycle on repeat. White privilege also persists because it is psychological—a subconscious prejudice perpetuated by white people’s lack of awareness that they hold this power. One of the first steps to dismantling white privilege is through education that increases awareness. What do y’all think?

James Lawson. James Lawson and the Nashville student civil rights leaders were influential in the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), founded in April 1960. SNCC was a civil rights group formed to give younger black people more of a voice in the civil rights movement. The group organized and carried out sit-ins and freedom rides. I’ve been getting great questions about white privilege. When I address white privilege, understand that the roots of white privilege can be traced back to historic inequities.
.
.
Having white privilege and recognizing it is not racist. But white privilege exists because of historic and current racism and biases. Therefore, understanding white privilege requires understanding the development of white identity, the identity development for people of color, and historic racism. What do y’all think?
