Sunset in Glen Sligachan in gloomy weather

Sligachan, Isle of Skye

Thank you all for visiting and your kind comments, awards and faves - I appreciate them all.

The Black Cuillins, in a mood.

A new location for me, on the Allt a' Choire Greadaidh in Glen Brittle.

A very pleasant afternoon, thanks to SkyeBaggie for suggesting the socially-distanced outing.

Elgol again.

This is a blend of four images. Most of my images from here were unusable because of blurry foregrounds but I kept most of them to include the parts I liked the most.

The foreground is one image ( that barely passes as being sharp enough, but was the best of a bad bunch,) the splashes are from two separate images and the sky is the final image including Gars-Bheinn and the passing squall.

I'd actually been messing around with the in camera aspect ratios to try and force myself into really thinking about composition much more than I usually do and all images were shot as 5x4 in camera.

Should I keep or should I delete the figures on the right?

Elgol, being Elgol.

My third visit here. Spectacular place, especially in bonkers weather conditions.

A view of Sgurr nan Gillean under the bridge at Sligachan.

Sunset at the Cuillins, near Sligachan on Skye - shot as a vertical pano. Thanks to SkyeBaggie for the socially-distanced outing.

In memory of my friend Lawrence Cornell who passed away suddenly just a few days ago. SkyeBaggie (who introduced me to Lawrence) and I did a trip to Elgol to remember this lovely fellow who adored Elgol. I have photographed Elgol on a number of occasions with Lawrence, so it will now be impossible to see this location without my very fond memories of him - I shall miss him greatly.

Cliff top figures removed.

A magical moody day high up the Coire na Creiche and one of the many falls on the stretch commonly known as "the fairy pools".

The backdrop of Sgurr an Fheadain and the Balck Cuillin make it such a dramatic place to take your camera to capture the beauty of the setting. Sadly today with the greater accessibility onto the Isle of Skye and the new large Pay and Display Car Park at the bottom of the Glen, make this a little less tranquil than it once used to be. But it is still a stunning place with the crystal clear waters and the magical mountains.

Amber shades on a wonderful crisp white scene.

The mountain of Marsco towering above Glen Sligachen on the Isle of Skye. Part of the magnificent Cuillin mountains that dominate the skyline in the south of the island. All but a distant memory now.

Classic scene across Loch Scavaig to The Black Cuillin from Elgol. Whilst sunset never happened it was nice to see the view in some nice light.

One of the most beautiful places in the Isle of Skye

This is another photo from my wildcamping at the summit of sgurr na stri. One of the finest view on the Isle of Skye if not whole Scotland.

Definitely didn't do this place justice, which only means one thing! I certainly wouldn't object to waking up to this view again.

You can just make out the Dubh Ridge on the right, which 12 of us women ascended a few days before. A day that will stick in the memory. As will discovering a tick on my backside on the last day, and one of my poor companions having to extract it 😳

A perfect day on the Isle of Skye, Scotland's West coast. My dream cottage. The peak of Bla Bheinn pops into view on the right, middle right in the distance are the Red Cuillins of Skye, and the Striking high mountains across loch Scavaig are the Black Cuillins, the big peaks of Skye that rise out of the Atlantic Ocean.

I realise the colours are a little OTT but I played for it that way. I hope you like this shot like this. For the original see below.

Looking across from the summit ridge of Marsco to the quite wonderful peaks of Garbh Bheinn (left of centre), Bla Bheinn (right) and the little lump of Ruadh Stac. If you like hills, Skye is the place to come!

Even at just before 2pm, at this time of the year the sun is very low and right behind the Black Cuillin mountains, sunset still some while off. This is a right-place-right-time shot as the sun was in a perfect position for that starburst effect.

Any tog that has been to Sligachan on the Isle of Skye will easily recognise this location.

Sligachan contains the fountain of youth. The tales say that if you hold your head under the water for 7 seconds your face will forever stay young and beautiful.

Glen Brittle beach looking silky gold in contrast to the dark basalt /gabbro of the wonderful Cuilins. Sgurr Alasdair looking magnificent.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

And a return to my archives yet again! Can’t seem to get any momentum with posting these last couple of months. I picked a good half dozen images to process from the past two years and all were similar to images I’ve already uploaded. I’ve had three from Elgol stuck in my Work In Progress folder since the trip and can’t bring myself round to doing anything with them, so I’ve given myself a good talking to and persevered with this one.

Still didn’t like it until I put it through Viveza 2… rather like the outcome now, hope you do to.

The result of glaciation at Loch Coriusk, Isle of Skye

Looking across Loch Scavaig to the stunningly beautiful Black Cuillin.

Didn't have the best of conditions with a lot of low cloud during my visit but it did lift a few times.

Those rocks/pebbles are potential ankle breakers, not helped by having to have the dog on the lead because of the cattle that were dotted around the beach.

When we got back to the van most people had left leaving just a few togs and people drying off after kayaking. Had an interesting moment when a bull decided to use the front of the van to scratch it's behind. Gracie was quite intrigued whilst I was more concerned with the rocking and rolling of the van. After a good couple of minutes scratching away he moved off to his harem a little further up.

Sgurr An Fheadain towering above the fairy pools on the Isle of Skye. Part of the Black Cuillin mountains and the famous Cuillin ridge.

This beautiful place is Loch Coruisk at the base of the Black Cuillin mountain range. It is a fresh water loch and legend has it that it is home to the Kelpie (or water horses).

My little dog Monty on the track to Camasunary with Bla Bheinn taking centre stage, and Marsco in the distance. This was taken on the truly memorable walk up to Sgurr na Stri - and THAT VIEW!

You have to love Skye

...also known as the old bridge at Sligachan. As you can see, the height of the central span is not inconsiderable - and no Paul, I've checked, there is no Indianna Jones style invisible bridge stretching across from the new bridge to the old one.

I can however see how one would be completely taken in with the spectacular view across the river to the iconic three Munros of Sgurr nan Gillean, Am Basteir and Bruach na Frith.

God, I love this place!

Black and white landscape photography from The Isle of Skye, Scotland. Looking South along the Sound of Raasay the distinct difference between the rounded Red Cullins (left) and the jagged Black Cullins (right) is clear.

The Red Cullins are composed of granite that has been weathered while the Black Cullins are composed of gabbro, a volcanic igneous rock.

Enjoy!

The Fairy Pools is a series of picturesque waterfalls and crystal-clear pools in the heart of scenic Glen Brittle, in the western foothills of the Black Cuillins. The Pools offer stunning views of the Cuillin Hills.

Ahh, this time last year I was just returning home from my Skye trip. Not a bad view, eh? Think that's Sgùrr Alasdair hogging the limelight. Dearly wish I'd had something other than my teeny tiny M4/3 camera with me! Rematch please!

I've been to Skye about half a dozen times now , but this is a view I never tire of. Taken from Elgol on a warm but hazy day , looking across to the Black Cuillin ridge, a popular area for mountain climbing.

( Please excuse the distortion caused by shooting at 10mm. to capture the whole scene, I've adjusted as much as possible in Lightroom ).

The Black Cuillin are the finest mountains in the British Isles, bar none. Big, black, jagged and scary - who can fail to be impressed? Some of my most memorable mountain days were spent up there, and I hope I still have the legs to make it back.

This was taken from the top end of the Fairy Pools on a day that was quite wet and wild.

Camasunary in the spotlight as clouds roll in over the Cuillin. This lonely spot is along the coast from Elgol and the only way in is on foot along a rough steep track, or by boat.

Centre stage is the small lump of Gabro known as Sgurr na Stri. It's only relatively small at 494 metres high but it is also one of the best viewpoints in Britain.

Second visit of the day here. The first visit I couldn't see a thing because of low cloud and that was set to be the story for a while apart from a forecast break mid afternoon which thankfully came.

I was right that it's a long way up here, but I was wrong that it wouldn't be too busy. Took nearly two hours to get from Portree to the Fairy Pools earlier in the day and once there a man was walking up and down the queue of vehicles waiting for the car park telling them how long to expect before getting a space. Another 1hr at least I was told. I could see the path snaking up to the pools and there was literally hundreds of people on it. I decided against it and tried the Quiraing. Similar but not quite as bad.

So what began as an idea of a little bit of an adventure with the dog soon turned into frustration and it was clear I was going to be spending a lot of time in queues and in the van, which hardly seemed fair on the dog.

Weather forecast was grim for the next three or four days too and whilst such stunning scenery can lend itself to moody images you still have to be able to have something of a view which clearly wasn't going to happen for at least the next 3 days. For the same reason, too much driving and grim weather meaning little to no views I decided against the NC500 too.

Made my way back to the Lakes today stopping off in Glencoe and Tyndrum where I got fleeced for fuel. 168 a litre of diesel!

The whole drive was fantastic and what scenery I got to see was simply stunning but ultimately it was going to be too much for the dog.

Definitely will come back in Autumn/Winter when things should've calmed down a little.

The crystal clear water flowing down from the Black Cuillin forms the legendary "fairy pools" in the Coire na Creiche on the magical Island of Skye.

The weather was dreich, but in such a setting the conditions were perfect for a bit of waterfall photography. I had the place to myself and just waited for gaps in the rain and mist to capture this beautiful place.

Taken with a circular polariser to make the most of the pool and its clarity.
