This beautiful Male Blackburnian Warbler really put on a show for us. The light was getting better in this spot and it flew right in front of me. Hickory Run SP, PA
Blackburnian Warbler (Setophaga fusca) is known for its flame-orange throat that seems to glow even through fog and rain. Triangular black cheek patch and oddly shaped white wing patch are also distinctive. Females and immatures are washed-out versions of males—look for yellowish throat and triangular dark cheek patch. Prefers coniferous or mixed forests, but can be found in any wooded habitat during migration.

I was amazed at all the Halesia blooms the day I photographed this beautiful warbler. I also got to photograph a Chestnut-s1ded Warbler on a similar perch the same day. I think both species really stand out well against these white blooms. This bloom is also called Snowdrop and if you've ever seen a road or green grassy area covered with these fallen blooms I think you would agree Snowdrop is a good name.

This was the scene I alluded to on my prior post. The female on the left came down to this perch and quickly flew up a branch and took the small caterpillar and settled back down on this branch to prepare it for her consumption. I had my other eye surveying the scene while I followed her through the view finder. That's how I spotted her mate who came down to the same branch but was only partially visible in the view finder. I borrowed a technique from those who do panos in landscape photography and quickly focused on him and fired a few frames. I stitched two of the images together to get this pano to represent this amazing encounter. He can be seen, beak open, calling, presumably congratulating her on her catch :o).

The Blackburnian Warbler is considered one of the most beautiful warblers in North America and that is hard to argue when one sees the male in his breeding plumage in the spring sporting his fiery reddish-orange breast and distinct black angular mask.
They dwell mostly very high in coniferous and/or mixed forests where their nest will be located in the taller conifer trees near a branch tip. They live and forage in the spires and outer branches of the trees. It is believed that this foraging tactic helps to keep the food sources for all the warblers from becoming exhausted as each species seems to have their own feeding practices at different levels and areas within the trees.
Invertebrates like budworms, flies, spiders and beetles make up the majority of their diet plus a bit of fruit.
With the strong colouring in this juvenile I believe he may be a male and he is enjoying gleaning insects on a warm fall day.
