The Hall is more than seven hundred and fifty years old, and was built by King Håkon Håkonsson between 1247 and 1261.

From the outside, Heddal is a magnificent sight: Roof over roof, several spiers, tower caps with crosses, gable ends adorned with carved dragon heads, and the entire building is clad in shavings.
Heddal is today the largest of a total of 28 preserved stave churches in Norway. It is built in two heights, which means that it reaches a full 26 meters above the ground.
