Foggy Rails.....

A few weeks ago a thick fog covered the entire area presenting the perfect photo opportunity for me and my camera.

I found this shot at the train crossing south of my house.

Tall Sentinels...

The Waterfalls at Hilton Falls Conservation area are amazing and fun to photograph in the best of weather conditions. yesterday was the first time I have been to the falls in the winter; mostly due to the three mile long trek in cold conditions and the slippery ice covered trail, which is better suited for snowshoes and cross country skis than my blundstones... (note to myself get some crampons or anti slip footwear next time) I only took one spill... landing hard on my posterior, other than my pride no real damage.

Even though the trip was slow and slippery it was well worth the hike. I got some great shots...I will post more later this week.

This is a shot of the long trail about half way to the falls; which is lined on both side with the most wonderful tall pine trees. this photo speaks for itself.

Fabulous Winter Trees....

The Waterfalls at Hilton Falls Conservation area are amazing and fun to photograph in the best of weather conditions. In mid February was the first time Karen and I have been to the falls in the winter; mostly due to the three mile long trek in cold conditions and the slippery ice covered trail, which is better suited for snowshoes and cross country skis than my blundstones... (note to myself get some crampons or anti slip footwear next time) I only took one spill... landing hard on my posterior, other than my pride no real damage.

Even though the trip was slow and slippery it was well worth the hike. we got some great shots...

This shot taken on our way into the falls is of the walking trail; a wide, though icy and slippery swath cut through the forest. the groomed trail helps visitors to the park navigate through the terrain without endangering the public in this well travelled conservation area... The sun was hanging low on the horizon and squinted through the tree tops to form this beautiful sun burst as light splintered in all directions. such a glorious and fabulous sight.

On this trip we choose the main trail, as we know the ground off the groomed trail would be extremely dangerous in the deep snow. in the summer we have ventured through the off trail areas beyond the main path. it a rough terrain; full of steep mossy covered rocks and fallen trees, sharp stumps and loose rocks...some very deep holes and rocky crevices that could easily swallow and seriously injure the novice hiker..

White As Snow...

since Just before New years i have been literally knocked off my feet by a rather nasty flu. so i haven't been able to get out and take any shots.

Over a week ago now we had a fairly heavy snowfall that continued well into early morning turning the dull grey of winter into a white clean wintry wonderland.

here are a few more from yesterday morning. I will post a couple more later this week.

Bus Trails In The Fog....

A few weeks ago a thick fog covered the entire area presenting the perfect photo opportunity for me and my camera.

I was setting up a shot of the fog shrouded street when a bus rushed past startling me and because it was a long exposure it blurred the bus as it went by... I thought it would be a wasted shot and would probably end up in the recycle bin. upon viewing it even though it is out of my wheelhouse I thought it might make a nice addition to my photostream. please let me know what you think.

Nighttime Playground...

This morning we awoke to a thick heavy blanket of white dense fog. it rolled in overnight and got thicker with each passing hour.

At the crack of dawn i was up and out, even before the sunrise to got a few shots. i figured the fog would dissipate by seven or so. so id best get as many as i could before it burned off.

this shot is at the the new children's playground the sun wasnt up yet and the lights shrouded in fog cast an eerie glow over the half assembled equipment.

This past week most of Ontario went through a major ice storm. The temperatures dropped below freezing then hovered in the -1 -2 Celsius range for three days; all the while it rained heavily, causing major chaos on the roads and covering trees and roads in a thick sheet of ice. Branches too week to withstand the heavy Burden of the thick ice snapped some even splitting trees in two, leaving such a mess for people to clean up. Many were without power for days. Where we live the damage was not as bad as in the Barrie and northern areas of southern Ontario.

Early the next morning I ventured out; carefully slipping and sliding my way to the local park to get these shots. As I crossed the frozen field I had to stomp my path through the icy frozen ground. The heavy layer of ice weighed down the trees until they were bent down and touched the ground, even the fence of the local baseball diamond was covered in a transparent layer of ice.

Frozen River...

On Wednesday night we had a fairly heavy snowfall that continued well into Thursday morning turning the dull grey of winter into a white clean wintry wonderland. i dressed in my warmest winter clothing and grabbed my camera bag and headed out the door.

i was giddy with anticipation of the photos I would get. in my mind I imagined all the fantastic shots I would take and I was not disappointed..... what photographer among us doesn't imagine that this shot will be his best so far. i know I see the shot in my mind before i even raise the camera to shoot.

i painstakingly adjust my ISO to get the crispest possible shot given the low light conditions of early morning. i then set my aperture and dial in my shutter speed, check and recheck my light meter for correct exposure and then compose and shoot.

here are a few more from yesterday morning. I will post a couple more later this week.

For The Love of Trees...

Sunday morning we awoke to a thick heavy blanket of white dense fog. it rolled in overnight and got thicker with each passing hour.

Later that afternoon the fog was still very thick, so Karen and I headed up to Heart Lake Conservation area and hiked into the lake to take some more shots.

This shot was taken just beyond the entrance to the park. this lovely tree stood resolute against the encroaching shadows created by the fog, yet dramatically isolated it from the background... the tree really stood out and was beautifully framed in the midst of the mist

Icebound.Lake...

This shot was taken at the lake, it seems as though some prankster had pushed a picnic table out onto the ice. it became the focal point of these two images. the table kept getting lost in the rolling fog. i had to wait for it to clear to get these shots.

The Wintry Forrest... (EXPLORED)

We wnet for a long winters photo hike. After two days of heavy snowfall, the park was covered in fresh fallen snow. it was a truly magical wonderland reminiscent of a scene from the movie Narnia

Shopping this time of year sucks. It has been brutally cold here in Cleveland for the past week or so. Down by the lake, the wind only adds to Winter's fury. Frozen shopping cart on the beach? Weird...

Shot using my wonderful Sigma 10-20mm lens. I'll be honest, there was a lot of tweaking done in PS as well to get it to something I liked. The sky was a flat grey in the original photo, so I did some levels/curves adjustments and then added some structure to the snow to make it stand out a bit more.

My street in Minneapolis, taken on Thursday, 3/1/07. I'm only just beginning to experiment with b/w conversions.

Taken with a Canon 35mm f/2 lens.

Stopped on the side of the road between West Yellowstone and hairemen state park last week to snag this shot. With the lowest temperature I saw being -3 it was cold and everything was frozen. But also beautiful
