Jute, known as the golden fiber, is one of the major agricultural produces of the region. Farmers bring their yields to local "মোকাম/ Mokam" or markets to sell. Then these are accumulated and sent over to the jute mills to produce ropes, bags, carpets, polythene bags and so on, all of which are biodegradable . Yes, polythene bags too, which degrades within 3 to 4 months in natural soil.

And river transportation is so prolific, nothing new needs to be explained here.

For the interested readers, please see the following articles regarding Polythene bags made from jute fibers :

Being the major playground of the long history of jute trade and having relatively finer fiber, Bangladesh always had advantage in raw jute trading. Still now Bangladesh is the largest exporter of raw jute in the world.

In1971,after the liberation war,the new government of Bangladesh had to take up the responsibility of rebuilding the industry. By a nationalisation order, about 85% of industries, including all jute mills, were nationalised.

Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) was formed to manage and look after all the 73 jute mills having 23,836 looms at that time. At one stage the number of jute mills under the jurisdiction of BJMC went up to 78. BJMC had to resurrect the industry from a ruined position.

Immediately after liberation, it became very difficult to solve problem of financial hardship of the jute industry because financial institutions were not working well. Frequent power failures and power stoppages also compelled the industry to suffer heavy losses in terms of production and foreign exchange earnings. In addition to these problems, the short supply of spares, labour unrest, wastage in production etc. also shook the industry severely.

Denationalisation of jute mills started in July 1982. The government ordered BJMC to complete the process by 16 December 1982, but only 10 mills could be handed over to Bangladeshi owners by that time. The valuation process and settlement of other organisational matters relating to handing over of the mills took a long time.

By 1998, BJMC had an accumulated loss of more than Tk 28 billion and a debt of more than Tk 11 billion. Losses incurred by BJMC in 1997-98 were Tk 2.38 billion.

The performance of the private sector jute industry is also not encouraging. privatisation itself has been a very problematic and slow process. Resistance from workers/employees of the mills and lengthy formalities forced the process to be slow. In 1998, out of forty jute mills in the private sector, three were closed and two laid off. The private sector jute mills run on a very low profile. Up to December 1999, the private sector jute mills have accumulated losses of more than Tk 12 billion.

The jute spinning mills in Bangladesh export nearly 100% of their production. In 1998, there were 41 spinning mills, which had an annual production capacity of about 195,000 tons. Products of these mills are yarn and twine, which are used the world over, for carpet weaving, wall covering, jute webbing, fabrics for shopping bags, caps, handicrafts, canvas, decorative fabrics, laminated cloth, and safety fuse for explosives. These mills employ about 25,000 people and the employers have their own trade body named Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association.

Today, although there are lots of problems circling around these poor-fed and petty workers, there are still many signs of hope.

"Jute hits billion dollar jackpot as exports cross $20b mark "

"BJMC going to make profit after 29 years "

"Bangladeshi Jute exports break all records "

These are stories which still give us hope. Over a period of hundred years, the industry which has bestowed upon us glory as a hard-working nation and has boosted our economy manifold single handedly should be patronised more than ever. Let "The Golden Fibre",as we call it, be revived and patronised more than any time before and bring smile in the faces of these petty jute workers, who silently constitute half of our industrial manpower.

Visit Bangladesh – producing a Travelers Guide was my long term ambition. When I published my first book ‘Bangladesh-e- Parjatan Akartion’ means Tourism Attraction Bangladesh in 1998 in Amar Ekush-e- Book fair in Dhaka Bangladesh. It was very popular and attractive to tourist, students and regular readers. Well wishers and tour organizations asked to write similar guide book in English so people all over the world will know about Bangladesh.I promised them that I will but do not know when. It will be a long time before I publish another book but it will be a little different from previous book.Visitors will find prior information in it, which will make their travel comfortable and a memorable one

Why Bangladesh? Is what this book is about? Why visit there? Many questions in your mind and answer are simple. Yes! Bangladesh is a country richer than most in natural beauty. It offers magnificent sunsets, majestic buildings, exquisite handicrafts and a cultural and warm hearted people.

I was born in Bangladesh and I visited most of the tourist attractive places in Bangladesh. I also visited many countries in the world but I found the people of Bangladesh very friendly. Tourist becomes friend. The Novel laureate poet Rabindranath Tagore told in his poem

‘I came to your home as a stranger

I stayed in your home as a guest

I left your door as a friend.’

It is true when you visit the country you will find Bangladesh is a developing country with a first growing population. Tourism is one of the most important and fastest growing industries in the world. Around one in 30 of the working populations are involved in an activity that supports tourism in Bangladesh. It has a historical & rich culture and heritage, world largest sea beach in Cox; s Bazar, the Lake District in Rangamati one of the most beautiful places in the country and the home of Royal Bengal Tiger in Sundarbon and attractive animals and birds.

Without help of well wishers I would not have been able to writte this book. I am very grateful to the persons and organization those who help me directly and indirectly to write this book. Special thanks to Sam Alim, setsu those who love Bangladesh from their core of heart. Thanks to my colleague Tony York who always inspired me to write this book. I am grateful to my father Chitta Ranjan Das Rtd senior Manager BJMC and a great freedom fighter in liberation war in Bangladesh who died last year always inspired and helped me to write this book.

Writing on travel is my hobby not profession. I have been writing on different news papers and Magazines since my boyhood. This is not a book for commercial purpose but my aim to help visitors who want to visit Bangladesh. Any suggestion or advice would be appreciated. Any mistake in this edition will be rectified in next addition.

Thank you

With best regards

Debasish Das
