This Bittern was showing from the Bittern Hide (funnily enough) at Minsmere RSPB 21st May 2014. It was the first time we had ever seen one and we watched it for ages!

Bitterns have remarkable eyes. When viewing this image at the large or original size you can see the cornea is so incredibly transparent that the pupil appears to protrude from the eye socket.
Sat looking at this Bittern for about 20 mins before I actually seen it. I only seen
it then because it moved. So hard to spot. Blashford Nature reserve near Ringwood Dorset.
Having stood in the cold for a couple of hours, I was rewarded with a good sighting of a bittern. He or she stalked along the reeds just across the water from us for some time, and even caught and ate a fish.
