So this is the same bittern as posted before with the bad hair day. He was just sitting out in the open very close to the side of the road, which is quite odd for a bittern, whom usually dont feel too comfortable without some tall grass to try and mimic! But it didnt take long to see why this little guy was out in the open, he had his eye on a giant vole and or rat, not quite sure what it was but it was huge. A little series down below, the last shot is of the rodent down the gullet, he swallowed it pretty quickly and was not facing the camera so that was the only shot of the vole/rat that came out decent.

Over the moon to see my first bittern at the London Wetland Centre. It gave us a great view directly in front of the Headley Discovery Hide

Great Bittern, Botaurus stellaris, 大麻鳽, Mai Po Nature Reserve 米埔自然保護區, 21 Nov 2015 (D4s, AF-S NIKKOR 600MM F/4G ED VR)

An American Bittern is part of the heron family. Seeing one here is a sure sign of spring. They will be gone come summer. Generally reclusive, it's rare to see one out in the open such as here.

Am. Bittern taken at the Ridgefield NWR. This is my FIRST portrait of a Bittern with food in it's bill. Unfortunately, It was overcast & raining, plus lots of distracting grass....but I am pleased because most of the time these birds are hiding in the tall grass....very difficult to see.

[This one must have been a young one as it is smaller than the one's I've photographed in the past.]

I've been really lucky to have some nice views of these splendid birds.

And have a great deal of nice shots and vid clips. So it's a bit hard to choose which to post......and having literally hundreds of shots.......I haven't had time to go through them all.

So as not to over do them.......I'll do another post later in the week with another vid clip too.

Taken in Forest Farm Nature Reserve

Bittern at Minsmere Nature reserve...ok this is definitely the last upload of Bittern taken last March!

This American Bittern was preening and posing near the Cypress Forest at Green Cay yesterday morning. It then took off and flew across the boardwalk to land in the bullrushes on the side of the pond.

Best viewed large on black.

I was informed this was a female?

Bittern at Ham Wall from the new Avalon Hide – Sadly one of only a few in focus images, but a fun entertaining afternoon with friends, and amazing bird activity.

American bittern inhabits grassy habitat where voles, and leopard frogs abound.

The Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis) is a small bittern. It is of Old World origins, breeding in much of the Indian Subcontinent, east to Japan and Indonesia. It is mainly resident, but some northern birds migrate short distances. It has been recorded as a vagrant in Alaska and there is a single record from Britain, from Radipole Lake, Dorset on November 23, 1962 - however, the BOU have always considered this occurrence to be of uncertain provenance and currently it is not accepted onto the official British List.

This is a small species at 38 cm length, with a short neck and longish bill. The male is uniformly dull yellow above and buff below. The head and neck are chestnut, with a black crown.

Bittern at Minsmere Nature Reserve, Suffolk, England

At Wakodahatchee today with my dear friend Karin (Kokonut on Flickr) who spotted this stealthy creature in the weeds... my first shot was the best, 30 images later I didn't have anything better than this one... kept hoping he'd fly, but no luck there... a big thanks to Karin!

It didn't take long for an admiring crowd to form!

Lots of action and lots of people out there today.

Not the best shot in the world, but this rather secretive bird is The Bittern that can often be heard "Booming" in the reed beds at RSPB Old Moor.
