A Bittern set. Was great to watch this Bittern on top of the reeds, then take off and head towards the channels. So well camouflaged within the reeds!

This young American Bittern convinced it has given me the slip in the thick weeds raises up it's long neck to make sure the coast is clear.

One distant Bittern but nice to see none the less.

Like I said, took rather a lot of the Bitterns... There were 2 mooching about in the reeds so slightly made the most of the moment. Please see Suffolk June 2013 set flic.kr/s/aHsjG5WJ4z

seen at Minsmere a truly brilliant sighting as it came out of the reedbeds right in front of the hide.

Will catch up soon.

23.12.2016 - Pennington Flash . It was great today after about 40 years of trying to finally see a Bittern out in the open instead of hidden in the reeds at pennington and for some reason for a few second ,it did some sort of jig or dance with the wings flapping -brilliant to see even if the light was poor

Another from the pontoon boat.

Anne managed to spot this least bittern hiding in the reeds.

You have to love those feet.

They are about 11-14 inches in length and are well camouflaged

Bittern - Botaurus stellaris. I'd heard the Bittern booming, then noticed the top of the reed bed moving, then out he flew!

This American Bittern was spotted a week ago at Willband Creek Park, which is only 10 minutes from home but I just never got around to going to see it. I got a reminder from a friend about it yesterday and I got a very brief view as it flew away. This morning with the help of another couple birders I got to spend quite a bit of time watching and waiting for it to come out more into the open from the flooded grass.

I got a lot more photos that I will share later.

Bittern in flight, a long day in the hide, but worth it in the end!

Bittern (Botaurus stellaris). My best in flight shots so far. It was a good day watching them skulking through the reeds and fishing for a pretty big fish. Then taking to the air. This is a big crop as I only had a 300mm lens on,
