NCB Lothians Area operated a Machinery Stores at Arniston near Gorebridge where various bits of surplus machinery were stored if they were considered too good to scrap.

Look carefully here and we can see a loco which at first looks like a Hunslet but is actually Ruston & Hornsby 283868 of 1949 from Kinneil Colliery at Bo'ness which has been modified with the radiator from a Hunslet.

It was originally a flameproofed model supplied for underground service but the exhaust conditioner has been bypassed with a direct outlet here, suggesting its use in the surface stockyard. 9th August 1979.

I had a long chat with the owner of this who really knew his stuff. The quality of his work was A1 as well.

This is something of a bitsa which he'd built for himself to be an enjoyable and reliable rider rather than an original show bike. The engine is a modern Chinese Lifan 110cc unit which is a common ugrade for Cubs whose original engines are worn out.

The bike is a Japanese import first UK registered in 2019.

(Actually Miša, but she isn't that particular about spelling. :) )

With Lili gone, our home was acutely lacking something, so we decided we just can't any further postpone adopting a new family member. She's five months old pure bitsa (bits o' this an' bits o' that). In other words, she's totally unique.

Perhaps some traces of poodle (some strangely semi-curly fur) and terrier genes (front paws jutting sideways, plus she is fast and full of energy) - and quite a few other breeds in there. Almost surely some sort of greyhound or whippet too.

Her mother and the litter of seven were found abandoned in an empty house. Owners moved out and left their dog - with her few-days-old pups - without notifying anybody.

Dealing with a dead Iveco (the best sort!)

This is a something of a 'bitsa' machine, I gather, but based on a 400 Series chassis (or maybe 2 different ones!) and fitted with a Rolls Eagle and what looks like a 301 cab

This Spad was built as a US Navy AD-7 (later A-1J) in 1952 but joined the USAF in 1968 and flew as 52-142072 in Viet Nam. It made a gear up landing at Udorn AB in December '68 while operating with 602 SOS, 56 SOW coded "TT" and ended up on the gate at Nakhom Phanon AB (also known as Naked Fanny). It got repainted and lost its identity for many years. When I say the 'main bit', the fuselage, stub wings and fin are all one piece. You could change the folding wing panels or the tailplanes- but no Skyraider can be a bitsa.

A heavily refreshed Land Rover, after failing its MOT in 2006. Looks like a 'bitsa' to me, although quite tidy.

I wouldn't usually take a photo of an Defender of this age, but the vibrant paintwork attracted me to it, and it didn't strike me as a colour I'd seen on many others.

Building the TL left the Dennis's original pump body spare but it didn't remain unused for long. Also in the box was an Oxford Scania CP28 cab that was left over from another project so I was able to combine the two and make this, which is probably unlike anything that actually exists but was a good way to use up leftover parts. It is a real bitsa with smaller parts taken from various other partly cannibalised Oxford models.

Nice looking old Mini but in reality something of a bitsa. It has a 998cc engine according to the DVLA; however IIRC (and I could be wrong) the only Mini available with that engine in 1967 was the Cooper; standard Minis having an 848cc motor. The "1275 GT" boot badge is off a much later 1275 GT Clubman. Only one MOT on record and now exempt.

Always nice to see an old Cornish reg too.

It has non-original wheels (R5 GT Turbo I think?), but the grille and spoilers make me wonder if this is a 16v. Could just be a bitsa.
