The South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), also called the southern sea lion and the Patagonian sea lion, is a sea lion found on the Chilean, Ecuador, Peruvian, Uruguayan, Argentine and Southern Brazilian coasts. It is the only member of the genus Otaria. Locally, it is known by several names, most commonly lobo marino (sea wolf) and león marino (sea lion).
The South American Sea Lion is perhaps the archetypal sea lion in appearance. Males have a very large head with a well-developed mane, making them the most lionesque of the eared seals. They are twice the weight of females. Both males and females are orange or brown coloured with upturned snouts. Pups are born greyish orange ventrally and black dorsally and moult into a more chocolate colour.
The South American sea lion's size and weight can vary considerably. Adult males can grow over 2.73 m (9 ft) and weigh up to 350 kg (770 lb). Adult females grow up to 1.8–2 m (6–7 ft) and weigh about half the weight of the males, around 150 kg (330 lb). Massive beasts!
The overall population of sea lions is considered stable; the estimate is 265,000 animals. Although they are still killed due to their habits of stealing fish and damaging fishing nets, despite being protected. (wikipedia)
This group of females were gathered on a small rocky island in the Beagle Channel, Ushuaia. They were being carefully monitored by Dolphin Gulls and a few Snowy Sheathbills, a species I did not expect to see there. The phrase "I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" sprung to mind with this scene.

Young bird asking for another worm. Bitd's nest underneath railway trestle. I didn't hang around too much longer, not wanting to get attacked by a protective momma bird. Judging by the white mess on the ground below, I didn't want to get pooped on either.

This was in one piece when I took it out of the packaging, but as I was handling it to trim bitd off, the handle just fell. You can see how thin the join was before it snapped. More green stuff and glue, and it seems to be holding okay.
Rory's prerunner pulls the Crew 35 Ranger out of his driveway on the way to Speedway Expo. This truck and trailer combination produced quite a few awed looks on the way up.
