Published by Walter Scott, Bradford, probably 1940/1 as the reverse has the following quotation by King George VI; "... help to make the world a better place and life a worthier thing." This quotation is taken from his Christmas Day message, 25th December 1940.

I'd estimate the picture was taken a year or two before that. The back to back shops in front of the Bishop Blaize pub were demolished not too long after, and in the 1960's United buses used to stop where the buildings stand in this picture.

Holy Trinity chapel is, and never was, the parish church. Services are still held in part of the building, although much of the space is given over to the Green Howard's Regimental Museum, see; www.richmondhudswellparish.org.uk/holy-trinity-chapel.html

PC Clare Robinson and Ben Plunkett.

A man’s life was saved thanks to the quick thinking of officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford division.

During the incident, which took place on Tuesday 12 April 2011, two officers were quickly on scene to provide vital emergency resuscitation to victim prior to the arrival of paramedics.

At around 3pm, PC Clare Robinson of the Stretford NPT and response PC Xan Donagher were on patrol near to Old Trafford Stadium when a member of staff approached them from the Bishop’s Blaize Public House. The officers were told that Ben Plunkett, colleague at the pub, had suffered an electric schock, collapsed and gone into a fit.

Both officers attended the pub and PC Donagher called for an ambulance. As they waited for it to arrive, PC Robinson revived the victim’s breathing firstly using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, then chest compressions after his breathing stopped again. At this point, the victim started to regain consciousness and was taken by ambulance to Manchester Royal Infirmary. He has since returned home.

PC Clare Robinson said: “I tried to remain as calm as possible. I am aware that this type of thing happens up and down the country all of the time but this is the first time I have had to call upon my CPR skills.

“It was all a bit nerve-wracking; the victim was in a bad way when we got there, plus I had to get his breathing going on two separate occasions.

“It still hasn’t really sunken in, but needless to say we were delighted when the victim came around and I would like to wish him a speedy recovery.

Chief Superintendent Mark Roberts, Divisional Commander for Greater Manchester Police’s Trafford Division said: “I am proud of the officers. They showed calmness, skill and excellent decision making while under considerable pressure.”

A RAWTENSTALL bar and function room has closed after the licensee departed, leaving the venue with unfulfilled bookings.

Punch Taverns, owners of Madison’s, in Burnley Road, said their priority was to re-open the establishment, but said that all bookings had been made with the licensee and they had no access to them.

ROSSENDALE's newest landlord is raising a toast after being told he is the youngest in Lancashire.

Thomas O’Toole, 20, has taken the helm at Maddison’s Wine Bar, in Burnley Road, Rawtenstall, after working as a barman there for four years.

He said brewery bosses from Punch Taverns, which owns the town centre bar, and licensing officers told him they had never heard of a younger landlord.

A LANDLORD, believed to be the youngest in the country, has called time on his role at a Rawtenstall bar.

Thomas O’Toole, 21, said he was ‘gutted’ after quitting Madisons Wine Bar in Burnley Road on Monday evening.

Nine members of part-time bar staff could also lose their jobs as a result of the decision.

Owners Punch Taverns say a new licensee has been found but there is no guarantee the current staff will be kept on.

ONE of the valley’s most popular weekend venues is set to be given a new lease of life - by former staff.

Madisons in Burnley Road, Rawtenstall, is set for a revival this Friday as it reopens after several weeks’ absence.

And partners in H2Inns are hoping that the relaunch will bring back the glory days to the sprawling nightspot.

Each of the bosses have previously either worked behind the bar at Madison’s or been in charge of their own hostelries elsewhere in Rossendale and surrounding areas.

Bishop Blaize Hotel, Burnley Road, Rawtenstall (Madisons)

Named after the 4th century Bishop of Sebastea, in Asia Minor (now part of Turkey), who was the Patron Saint of Woolcombers – an important industry in 18th and 19th century Rossendale.

The present building is the third hotel on the site, the first being built about 1800, the second in 1879 and the present building in 1901. The Bishop Blaize Hotel closed its doors in March 1992 and stood derelict for more than a year. In 1993 the premises were bought by P. W. Leisure and after a refurbishment costing £200,000 it re-opened in December 1993 as the “Madison Park Wine Lodge”.

More recently the business was put to auction and was due to go under the hammer on 5th December 2013 but was sold by private treaty prior to auction at price of approximately £150,000.
