Amethyst

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz.

The name comes from the Koine Greek ἀμέθυστος amethystos from ἀ- a-, "not" and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθύω methyo, "intoxicate", a reference to the belief that the stone protected its owner from drunkenness. The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and carved drinking vessels from it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication.

Amethyst is a semiprecious stone often used in jewelry and is the traditional birthstone for February.

Macro Mondays - Superstition

Image measures less than 2" on the long side.

Opal is October's birthstone, and many believe that it is unlucky to wear, if it's not your birthstone. I had a difficult time photographing these earrings! In direct sunlight the colors and contrast were too harsh, too extreme but in ambient light the colors were too washed out. I finally got the right mix of sunlight and background, and finished with a little Dehaze and positive vignette in post. I just hope next week's theme isn't earrings, lol! The earrings are sitting on amethyst crystal. : )

Today is a pink/purple day at Color my World daily Group. And the theme at Smile on Saturday is gemstones.

And what is my birthstone ? Amethyst of cours ! And it happens to be the perfect color for today's pink/purple theme.

And who is the best representative of amethyst in my house ? Mr. Amethyst Skull of course! He is classy, he is stylish and he always wears a hat ! Mr. Amethyst skull is a gentleman from another era. He was a gift for my birthday from me (yes, sometimes I give myself gifts since I’m the one who knows the best what I want ;-)). I saw Mr. Amethyst Skull and it was love at the first sight ! I had to have him in my collection ! Yes, of course, i was into gothic stuff a lot during this time of my life. I was wearing black & purple only and skulls and other macabre things were very appealing to teenager @magda627.

Mr. Amethyst Skull is a historical evidence of another « life » I had ages ago ! In this picture , Mr. Amethyst Skull is standing near a raw amethyst which is a part of my son's gemstones collection.

My father wore this ring for as long as I can remember. I think he got it in Hong Kong in the 1950s. You can see it is well worn. When he passed away, he gave it to me because it is my birthstone.

The theme for for "Looking Close… on Friday" for Friday 6th of June is "bokeh in blue", where I decided to use Sapphire. Sapphire is one of my miniature bear family. She is a little Russ Bear of royal blue plush with leather paws who arrived on Christmas Day 2023 – a gift from my friend BKHagar *Kim* I have photographed her sitting with a piece of Victorian era Calico Ware that I did indeed dig up from my garden. It’s the only piece I have ever found. She is sitting on the glass topped table on my back terrace, which has a blue tint to it, and is wonderful for creating a sparkling bokeh background. I hope you like my choice of subject for this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
