The Great Hornbill
Scientific name: Buceros bicornis
The largest hornbill species in India, Great Hornbills are also called Great Indian or Great Pied Hornbills.
The Great Hornbill, also known as the concave-casqued hornbill.
In India they are mainly found in the foothills of the Himalayas and parts of northeast India, along with the Western Ghats.
These striking birds measure 95 to 130cm in length and are identified by their black and white plumage and their large, curved beaks.
Great Hornbills nest within natural cavities of large, old trees, especially those that rise above the canopy.
Apart from deforestation and habitat fragmentation, their populations are also significantly impacted by hunting.
Myths about the medicinal value of their meat and an interest in their large casques makes them frequent targets.
Last Friday, 17/06/26 we set off early to discover the wonders of the Western Treatment Plant, eager to photograph some raptors. The day unfolded beautifully, with every bird posing perfectly for us, leaving us thrilled to return home and download our images. We captured a diverse array of wildlife, from majestic raptors and elegant herons to the cranes, masked lapwings, playful kangaroos and vibrant toadstools. I have tried to capture swans in flight for years and never succeeded. Today was the day to put that to an end, and I could not be happier with the result. The day was so still, with barely a ripple across the ponds, perfect for reflections; it was a bucket-list moment to say the least. It had been some time since our last visit, and we were invigorated by the breathtaking winter light that surrounded us

Well-attired small songbird typically associated with mid- to high-elevation farms, fields, and open forests throughout its range. Found in less intensively developed areas than House and Eurasian Tree Sparrows, sticking to villages and pastures and staying away from large city centers. Male has bright chestnut cap and back, whitish cheek, narrow black throat, and pale gray belly. Female brownish with broad streaks above, pale below, with white wingbars and broad tan supercilium.

Kingfishers are small unmistakable bright blue and orange birds of slow moving or still water. They fly rapidly, low over water, and hunt fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface. They are vulnerable to hard winters and habitat degradation through pollution or unsympathetic management of watercourses. Kingfishers are amber listed because of their unfavourable conservation status in Europe. They are also listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act offering them additional protection.
