Cassowary House, Australia-1803

Rainbow lorikeets in the garden. This pair attracted to the numerous Callistemon bottlebrushes that I've planted that were having a small, extra little flush of flowers before the end of summer.

These birds are feisty, self-assured characters. Bold personalities and behaviours that match their eye-catching and dynamic colours.

They delight us all along the east coast here in Australia. Their natural habitat being rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas.

To see them flocking en masse, darting at speed across the bright blue sky is truly magical.

These are specifically sub-species Trichoglossus moluccanus moluccanus.

Around 30 cm body length.

Striated Thornbill (Acanthiza lineata) with a spider which will make a great meal, central Victoria, Australia. This little fellow was not phased by my presence, and was happy to sit perched on this thin branch while I took some shots.

Rainbow Bee-eater (Merops ornatus), central Victoria, Australia. This Bee-eater was quite far away, so I tried a more environment-focused crop.

Brown Falcon (Falco berigora) near Bulla, Victoria. This bird of prey was hunting amongst the thick grasses, and blood from an earlier catch is visible on the bird's beak.

Kingfisher Park, Australia-1815

Environmental shot of a Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus sanctus) amongst the Eucalyptus leaves, Woodlands Historic Park, Melbourne, south-eastern Australia. Taken October, 2022.

Eastern Spinebill (Acanthorhynchus tenuirostris), central Victoria, Australia. This is my first encounter with this species, and I was very happy to find two or three of these birds in the forest on an overcast day recently. They were passing through as part of a mixed feeding flock with Striated and Yellow Thornbills. This bird appears to be a young adult based on the moulting head feathers (?); it spent most of its time deep in the Silver Wattle, but sat on this open perch for a moment watching us inquisitively.

I desaturated the greens and yellows in this image of a Splendid Fairywren to imitate a painting I saw. I’ve already been told by the first person I showed it to that the green background was nicer but being stubborn as I am, I decided to go with it anyway 😂

Brown Falcon (Falco berigora) in flight, central Victoria, Australia. Unfortunately, I just missed a shot of this falcon perched on a fallen log in a field, but thankfully I managed a few in-focus shots of the bird as it flew away.

European Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. A small group of these birds, including at least one juvenile, perched on this tree for just a short moment before moving on. This image was taken from quite far away, but I still liked the setting.

Male Golden Whistler (Pachycephala pectoralis), central Victoria, Australia. I finally managed to capture one of these birds below the canopy on a relatively open branch in December. They have such beautiful songs and a striking combination of colours.

Striated Thornbill (Acanthiza lineata), central Victoria, south-eastern Australia. This is another shot of the Striated Thornbill I posted back in November which was holding a spider in its mouth.

Flame Robin (m) (Petroica phoenicea) from one of two encounters with this species this winter, central Victoria, Australia. The female was hunting across the forest floor nearby, while the male briefly surveyed the area from this low vertical perch; he then joined her shortly afterwards. This is an extreme crop, so fine feather detail is lacking, but I really liked the setting.

Striated Pardalote (Pardalotus striatus), Woodlands Historic Park, Melbourne, Australia. This little fellow was part of a pair that were creating a nest in a small eucalypt tree hollow back in October 2022.

Brown Thornbill (Acanthiza pusilla). This has been my nemesis bird for a while, as Brown Thornbills can be challenging to photograph. The red iris indicates that this bird is an adult; juveniles have dark irises

Male Superb Fairy-wren (Malurus Cyaneus) in breeding plumage, Woodlands Historic Park, Melbourne, Australia.

Dusky Woodswallow (Artamus cyanopterus) central Victoria, Australia. I often see these birds at a distance, but getting close to them is usually a challenge. Thankfully, this one was more approachable, which allowed me to capture a few shots.
