Giraffes, despite having such humongous necks, actually have the same number of neck vertebrae as a human. There are only seven vertebrae in mammal necks, meaning that the giraffe has vertebrae that are nearly a foot long each! Their cervical (neck) vertebrae have actually just extended in length, instead of adding more bones into the anatomy. This elongation is responsible for the neck becoming so long.

It sure was nice to hit the sand and to find a Piping Plover early in the season. Tougher getting up, but well worth it for shots like this of such a cute little bird. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park NJ.
This is the Male Cardinal, one of my back yard birds, come to the feeder everyday with the Female Cardinal. In the Fall and Winter this bird turn rich red, the most amazing color. This Red Bird is often considered a sign of compassion, passion, pride and love. It represents traits like intuition, love, grace and focus. Seeing this red bird may indicate things like power, survival, security, leadership and intentions. When you wear red it makes a loud statement also, beautiful color.

Well, it makes me happy to see them in my backyard. They are checking out the boxes, but haven't moved in yet. I'm trying to keep them happy with mealy worms. It would be great to have nesting Eastern Bluebirds, at Bill's Backyard Bird Blind.

The American Kestrel or Sparrow Hawk when I was growing up. The Golden Nature Guide for birds was my go to book and I used it religiously. I wore it out wanting to know what I was seeing everyday. I had the whole collection of the guides. This guy is in his usual haunt in Bucks County PA.

For as big as the Sandhill Cranes are, they fly so gracefully. They were fun to watch as I was shooting them. Pine Run Reservoir, Bucks County Pa.
Common Tern flying back to the colony to feed it's young with a sandflea at Nickerson Beach Park, Long Island NY. It was a great and beautiful day on the beach. So many birds flying, on the ground and chicks ranging in all different sizes.
