Came across this beautiful male Regent Parrot whilst checking a few local spots. This is full frame so he was so close I had no where to move without him being spooked..Still a treat to get right beside me.
Such a hard bird to photograph as always high in gum trees.Lucky as these were feeding in a low shrub during spring and autumn fallen tree close by to perch on.

I spent around 3 weeks watching several Red capped Plovers from starting to nest till the chicks were hatched.Such a special time.Fremantle Western Australia
A few days ago I tried some backlit photos with the new kit! After not finding many other birds, I decided to just use some common Zebra Finches as my subject. The orange sunrise and dead branch really give the image that ‘outback’ feel! Oh and let me know what you think about the new watermark :)

Unusual local finds.. These Miners certainly looked like they had settled in.. Plenty of food in this habitat..
A few months ago I had the pleasure of photographing this incredible species just a kilometre or so from my house. Had a great time watching the Harrier hunt. He would hover close to the ground and dive into the long grass. This is among the first few keepers taken with my 500mm f4 ... Such a great experience! :)

Dusky Grasswren (Amytornis purnelli)
A few days ago we had some cloudy weather so I headed out to do some birding. Drove to a good ol Grasswren location and hiked around for about 30 minutes. I heard a few calling and decided to investigate. Came across two of them bathing and drinking from a small pool of water that hadn’t dried up yet. I sat in a hidden area where I could get some clear photos right where they would sit when jumping back and fourth from the water source. Pretty happy with the end result.

A small flame robin perched gently on the tip of the tightly nit scrub, its vivid tangerine colour was such a contrast to the blue, green and greys of the flora below. I snuck up as quiet as I could, that could be compared to a bull in a China shop, but I was patient. The tiny robin finally landed and was kind enough to let me photograph it.
Crimson Chat (Epthianura tricolor)
Since my 150-600mm lens is broken again, I have resorted to using my 100-400mm again. These last couple of weeks have been super wet. Lately there have been literally hundreds of these beautiful Crimson Chats out in the now green landscape! This is a photo I managed a few days ago! Let me know what you think!

As generic as a title like “The Hunt” is, I find it hard to think of a better one that portrays the what I had witnessed over the span of a week with these incredible birds. So a few months ago, you all might have noticed that quite a few photographers were posting photos and videos of the huge flocks of budgies. At the time there were literally tens of thousands of budgies out here in the outback, and it obviously wasn’t just here in Kings Canyon. Budgies are often overlooked, but when you see them in flocks of tens of thousands, it’s hard to not want to take some photos! What I found even harder, was to take a photo that accurately portrayed the “huge flock” scene. The common closeups are often nice, but there’s something incredible, seeing the enormous size of the flocks. I waited till they would fly away from me and circle back, that way I could get a side profile of the whole flock and have them smaller in frame, to adequately capture the sheer size of the group. Now the budgies aren’t the only birds in full swing. Over the week, I watched multiple species of raptors trying to grab a snack - some successful, others not so much. On one morning as I watched the budgies do their usual loop, I noticed a Brown Goshawk chasing them. This was the first time both species were together in an adequate position to make a photo like this possible! With excitement, and shaky arms, I captured the goshawk diving up into the cloud of budgies. Truly an awesome experience, and one that definitely won’t be forgotten!

Patience was needed to catch a glimpse of this beauty. The Merlin app told me there were 6 or more varieties of birds in the woods and brush, but none to be seen. After move stealthily about and playing some calls of these birds, one finally emerged.

Had a great experience with these wild budgies a while ago. I’ve always wanted to photograph them nesting, or just sitting in a hollow in general. I was super stoked to see this little guy fly up into a hole in a tree branch. I jumped out of the car and manoeuvred to where I could see directly into the hole. Surprisingly the budgie popped its head out to investigate which made for a great photo! :)

Follow the sound into thickets and vine tangles and you’ll be rewarded by a somber gray bird with a black cap and bright rusty feathers under the tail. Gray Catbirds are relatives of mockingbirds and thrashers, and they share that group’s vocal abilities, copying the sounds of other species and stringing them together to make their own song.

A covid hobby of mine was building nesting boxes for my backyard, for gifts, etc. One of the newest models is mounted in a Norwegian Spruce right off the back deck and there is a family of wrens making good use of it.

A new day, same performance. Same bird??? 4 weeks earlier I witnessed the same behavior, on the same branch, in the same spot. Both times an Eastern Kingbird put on the show. Coincidence? I think not!

After hatching, the ducklings jump down from the nest tree and make their way to water. The mother calls them to her, but does not help them in any way. The ducklings may jump from heights of over 50 feet without injury.

One of the most beloved backyard birds, thought to bring good luck and fortune or represent the spirit of a loved one, the brilliant red of the cardinal is a beautiful sight to see.

One of the most populous birds in the United States, the Red-winged Blackbird is hard to mistake with its black body and striking red and yellow shoulder patches. They are found in abundance atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires.

Once a male Wood Duck's need for fancy feathers to attract the females has passed, these birds molt and their bright feathers are replaced with mottled brown ones. Come fall, the male Wood Ducks will molt again and become the colorful dandies we appreciate.

This bird stayed put on that log for a good long time patiently watching both sides for any small fish or amphibians to poach. I saw it get several snacks while I sat patiently on my own log on shore.

This Eastern Kingbird put on a performance of flying in short, tight loops and landing on the same perch. This went on for several minutes even as a light rain began to fall.

Don’t have much to say about this image because I don’t even remember taking it. Found this one deep in the archives while culling a bunch of old photos. One of the first photos I took with the 500mm f4 lens. Edited up quite nicely! :)

Eastern Kingbird perched on a branch above the 24-acre Hawkins Pond.

A few months ago, I at the top of the Kings Canyon rim walk photographing the abundant Painted Finches that were around at the time. I definitely wasn’t expecting this encounter! I was sitting low, waiting for the finches to land on the selected branch, when to my surprise, this nightjar swooped down over the rocky outcrop and landed right in front on me! Completely stunned, i manoeuvred in a way where I was able to photograph him without too many distracting elements. Unfortunately he wasn’t perched in the prettiest of places, but I think the species makes up for it! Instead of trying to edit the heck out of it, I decided to roll with a more earthy, moody edit. Let me know what you all think!

An overcast afternoon found me wandering the trails at Brick Pond in Owego, NY. The Merlin app alerted me to a variety of birds in the area and I waited patiently for some to arrive. At last, this beauty came and landed 25 feet from me and I was able to capture a few wonderful shots.

Orange-red head, brilliant yellow body, and coal-black wings, back and tail - like looking into a flame. Our first morning in Gardiner (first time in Montana) we saw this bird while eating breakfast and I knew I had to get a photo. It was a bit elusive and it took me a couple of days, but my patience paid off!
