In tangled woods where shadows fall,
A whisper stirs, so faint, so small.
A flutter near the chaparral,
The bushtit weaves its quiet call.
No trumpet song or flash of fire,
Just gentle chirps that never tire.
A wisp of gray, a dash of flight,
It graces dawn and fades from sight.
With feathered kin it moves in cheer,
A social soul that draws in near.
From oak to branch, it hops in play,
In morning gold or dusky gray.
It does not seek the grandest stage,
Nor boastful song from poet's page.
Yet in its humbleness and grace,
It brings calm beauty to this place.
So pause and look with softened eye,
Where leaves may rustle, branches sigh—
For in the stillness, if you sit,
You just might glimpse the bushtit.

In the dappled light of morning’s grace,
Among the oaks and chaparral's embrace,
A tiny bird flits, nimble and quick,
The bushtit, in nature's tapestry, weaves its flick.
With a plump head and a tail so long,
It sings its part in the woodland song.
From highland Mexico to Vancouver's chill,
It graces gardens and parks, ever still.
In mixed woodlands where shadows play,
The bushtit greets each dawning day,
Darting through branches, leaves so green,
A fleeting whisper, often unseen.
Its diet, a dance on silken thread,
Small insects, spiders, on which it's fed.
In flocks it travels, a social sprite,
A tiny wonder, a pure delight.
Oh, bushtit, with your gentle song,
In nature’s choir, you belong.
A symbol of life, both free and slight,
In every flutter, pure delight.
Your presence in the quiet glades,
In every nook where sunlight fades,
Brings joy to those who pause to see,
The simple beauty, wild and free.
A regal Indian peacock (Pavo cristatus) in full display, showcasing its iconic fan of iridescent feathers. Captured in exquisite detail, this portrait highlights the vibrant blues, emerald greens, and hypnotic "eyes" of nature's most flamboyant showman.
Unique tiny woodpecker with olive-yellow wings, brown-and-white striped head, and black-spotted white breast and belly. Other piculets in range look very different, being mostly unmarked. Call is an extremely high “tsik tsik tsik.” Drums very loudly for such a diminutive bird. Widespread, found in lowland and foothill forests, often in areas with bamboo stands.
A close encounter with the Great Crested Grebe — alert, sleek, and just emerging from a dive. Droplets cling to its feathers as it glides silently through the gently rippling water, a shadow in motion.
A moment of quiet majesty—this Mute Swan glided into perfect light just as the wind caught its wings. Nature’s elegance never fails to amaze me.
An Indian Cormorant (Phalacrocorax fuscicollis) takes a break on a wooden pole rising from the tranquil waters of the Madu River in Sri Lanka. Often seen drying their wings or scanning the water for fish, these sleek birds are a common — yet always impressive — sight along rivers, lakes, and wetlands of South Asia.
The Madu River, known for its ecological richness and mangrove biodiversity, provides an ideal habitat for both resident and migratory birds. A peaceful moment that speaks to the balance of nature in this special place.
A solitary Black-headed Ibis (Threskiornis melanocephalus) seen roaming the open landscapes of Yala National Park, Sri Lanka. These striking birds, with their stark white plumage contrasted by a bare black head and curved bill, are commonly found in wetlands, marshes, and grasslands across South Asia.
Yala, known for its leopards and elephants, is also a haven for birdlife — from majestic raptors to graceful waterbirds like this ibis. Every corner of this vast national park offers a chance to encounter Sri Lanka’s incredible biodiversity.

Captured this serene moment just before sunset – a group of young goslings nestled together, soaking in the last warmth of the day. The golden evening light gave their soft feathers an almost magical glow.
Photographed with the Canon EOS R6 Mark II and the RF 100-400mm lens. This setup continues to deliver impressive detail and reach, perfect for wildlife moments like this one.
This photo features an American Coot (Fulica americana) gracefully gliding on rippling water. The coot's distinctive appearance includes its black plumage, a bright white beak, and striking red eyes. The water's surface creates a beautiful, swirling effect, adding a sense of movement and tranquility to the composition.
The sharp focus on the bird contrasts with the softly blurred background, drawing attention to the coot's unique features. The coot's posture, with its head slightly tilted, adds a hint of curiosity or awareness, making the image feel dynamic and engaging.
The overall mood of the photo is serene, capturing a peaceful moment in nature. The cool blue tones of the water enhance the calm ambiance, while the coot's black feathers add depth and contrast.
Love the water droplets in the background. They look like fairy dust surrounding this female Brewer's blackbird.
In our neighborhood, you can find the Brewer's blackbird bathing in our waterfalls. I actually thought it was Grackle at first. But once I looked deeper into it the colors and bill it was clear it's a Brewer's blackbird. If you zoom in you can see a bug in it' mouth.
A diving duck of larger lakes and reservoirs, especially with fringing reeds. Male striking and unmistakable with large, rounded, rusty-orange head, long red bill, and black breast. Female rather drab but distinctive: dirty buff overall with pale cheeks, dark face, and rounded brown cap. In flight, both sexes show a thick white wing stripe and whitish underwings. Feeds mainly by dabbling and upending. A common feature of waterfowl collections in European town and city parks.
I think this female Brewer's blackbird was equally watching me as I was watching her. She might have posed each time the shutter clicked!

Silver-throated Tanager.
Tangara Garganta Plateada.
