Today is National Bird Day. So what did I do today on my day off? Go take pictures of birds, of course.
This one is a Black-and-White Warbler. They are now starting to find their way up to our area again.
Distinctive warbler with bold black-and-white stripes over entire body. Adult males have black throat and cheek; females and immatures have white throat and paler cheek. Creeps along branches like a nuthatch, searching for insects. Breeds in mature deciduous or mixed forests; winters in a wider variety of wooded habitats as far south as northern South America. Listen for high pitched “squeaky-wheel” song. Breeding male Blackpoll Warbler is potentially confusing, but note different behavior and face pattern.
T'is my birthday today so I had the choice of adventure and chose the Wynnum Mangrove Boardwalk to see how many different birds I could catch - My wife called it my birdday. This was the catch of the day. Just a beautiful sight to have one land beside you.

Taken today at Canoe Meadows in Pittsfield, MA. Probably the same bird as Thursday. Same location and only the one seen.

Today is Courtney's Birthday..please wish her your best..she's another Back Yard Birder like me..great pics and a great patriot..as is her whole family....
We had to go to Sacramento today for our older daughter's birdday, but before we left I just had to see how the Anna's Hummingbird chick was doing. I don't want to miss his last day in the nest, and I know he's getting close because his flight feathers now overlap the edges of the nest.
It wasn't sunny, but it was bright and there were some rays hitting the bushes near the nest. Giving myself 15 minutes in case the mother (only females take care of the chicks) showed up, I sat on the ground, looked around, and 15-20 feet from me mama came to perch and watch me. As feisty as hummers are, she wouldn't approach the nest until I was gone, but I wasn't going until I got off one shot. And that's what I did: ONE shot, struggle to my feet, and off to Sac.
Even though it's supposed to be cloudy for the rest of the week, I'll keep checking in. Who knows if I'll ever get another opportunity like this?

I think I only have a few stragglers left and am assuming these precious ones are on their way to you, my Canadian friends. Take care of these little ones, please and return them to me. They literally have been eating me out of house and home!! I had to replace my suet twice daily . . . not to mention meal worms!!!
UPDATE . . . I have to offer an apology! I lied! The little buggers are still here!! They must have gone on some sort of outing yesterday because the weather was so glorious!! They were back en masse today! It will be later, my Canadian friends . . .
A rather large wasp or hornet. It's amazing what you can spot when you stop by the roadside to pee.

Happy BirdDay, Gretchen! Thanks for all you do for AEF & the eagles!
From Gretchen:
WEDNESDAY Tuck-In: At 5:39pm vocals were heard as Samson and A2 arrived at the nest. They perched, picked around in the nest, and are now roosting for the night nest-side. It was a peaceful day in the Hamlet. Thank you for the multitude of Birthday wishes. Y'all make this cam experience so special and are special to me and this entire volunteer NEFL cam team. Thank you for being part of the NEFL family and supporting AEF. SED y'all

Campaigns to raise money are a common thing on the Death Star with everyone trying to fund their missions, dreams and lost causes. Palpatine’s nephew is no different, and has his own agenda when he pays Stormtrooper Bruce a visit.
STB: Well, hello Little Dude, long time no see. Guess you and your family are still sequestered on the Officer’s Deck? Well, no matter. What brings you here, and what’s your name today?
Loki: Hello Unka Dude, I sure missed you. That Officer’s Deck is boring, no kids to play with after my lessons, just that Dark Vader. Momma doesn’t like him because he lets me have coffee and cookies. I’m here to sell more boxes of bubble gum like last time. Oh, and today I’m Loki.
STB: Yes, you are. And you’re selling bubble gum again? Still trying to raise credits to find those droids?
Loki: Goodness, no! It’s my Momma’s birdday and I want to buy her a new cookbook!
STB: Um, OK. I think I can guess why you’d want to do that.
Loki: She cried when no one liked her crabby pudding. But then she pulled up her big girl pennies, and she squeaked the recipe and made it even better.
STB: I think you mean she tweaked the recipe. And she made it better, you say?
Loki: Yes, she changed it to Choco-Octopus Pudding. And it was awful. I mean it was awfully good. And she said she has lots more better ideas, too!
STB: Oh! Well, that certainly is good to know!
Loki: Would you like to buy a box of bubble gum? I need lots of credits because I want to get her the biggest and bestest cookbook in the galaxy!
STB: Tell you what - put me down for three cases. I go on lots of missions and chewing gum always helps my ears. And you’ve certainly given me an earful today.
Loki: Wowzer, three cases! That’s more than Unka Pappy bought. When he heard about Momma's new recipes he wanted to help get that cookbook, too!

Photographed in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.
We have participated in an Internaitonal Migratory Bird Day event in Grand Teton for each of the past three years and will do so again this year. While snow and cold temperatures don't always make for great birding, but other forms of wildlife often emerge under these conditions. This image of Grizzly Bear #399 was shot last year during the event. With any luck, will see her again.
CHECK OUT IMBD:

Beefy’s birthday was a birding extravaganza. We started the day with sunrise donuts at the American River among various waterfowl. I then headed to swim practice and he returned to the river to take pictures (trying to identify a mystery duck!). After lunch, we went to Cosumnes and then Yolo for more bird fun.
Jacket and tunic, Mossimo. Leggings, We Love Colors. Boots, Dan Post. Sunglasses, Girl Props. Earrings, No Boundaries. Bag, Nine West.
The birding highlight was perhaps the giant flock of pelicans we spotted at Cosumnes. We also saw other new-to-us species like the yellow-rumped warbler (also known as the “butterbutt”), pintails, and the red-winged blackbird
