Back in 2005, I used three plastic trash cans as compost bins. I now use two Smith & Hawkins BioStack Compost Bins, but still use these to handle the overflow and to store finished compost that is ready to use.

This is the photo I use for my LiveJournal and Flickr icons.

Our second compost bin is getting full, so I took one of the tiers from the first bin and placed it on the second... making this one 4 tiers high.

We have stopped placing compost in the first bin, so it will finish the final step of composting before we empty it out.

[Update] This photo appears in the book "I Garden: Urban Style" by Reggie Solomon and Michael Nolan.

Here's my new Smith & Hawkins BioStack Compost Bin that I purchased from Craigs List.

Yeay! More compost!

When I got home from work, I found my Mom digging out a rotted apple tree stump at the side of our backyard storage next to one of our compost bins. She wanted to place the second compost bin on the other side of the garden next to this one.

The stump was fairly easy to take out since it was as soft as cork, but I took over the task of digging it out and filled the hole with some clay soil. I then went about doing some planting in the garden as my Mom moved the other compost bin to its new location and rearranged some of the stuff around there.

As I was planted some Lemon Cucumber seedlings into the vegetable bed, I heard my Mom calling for me. She said she saw a huge rat near the storage and gestured something the size of a foot. She added that it must have been old because it had white hair. So as I got up and went over to take a look, my Mom cracked me up when she asked if I had my camera, which of course I did.

My Mom said it was behind some wood leaning on the storage, so I moved it a little bit to take a look and discovered it was a small Opossum. Hmm, I didn't know what to do... My Mom then asked if I took a photo, which I didn't, yet... so she helped lean the piece of wood back, as I snapped a few photos.

After all that, I decided to clear a path where we can shoo the Opossum through a hole in the fence to our neighbor's yard. I figured that the Opossum will have more room there, but if it likes our yard better, it can return once the commotion of moving the compost bin has settled. So once I cleared a path, I moved to wood to completely expose the Opossum and it slowly ran through the path I made. Mission accomplished.

The End

The compost in our first compost bin is pretty much done. We will dry it a bit and strain out the big pieces. This will fill up about 2 or 3 thrash can fulls :)

This is what I use to turn and aerate the compost.

Meet Marvin... I guess he's our resident possum. This is the third day I've seen him... Unless we have more than one. Today I spotted him in our compost bin. He let me pet him for a little bit, and I was trying to give him a banana peel, but he ran away. Bye Marvin, probably seeya tomorrow. #possum #opposum #compost #compostbin #biostack #gardencritters May 07, 2020 at 09:25PM

I'm emptying our (shorter) compost bin with finished compost so I can transfer the unfinished compost in the other (taller) bin to it. As I was transferring the unfinished compost to the empty bin, I noticed that bottom half of the taller bin also had finished compost, so I harvested a little less than 2 trash can full of compost. #compost #biostack #compostbin November 29, 2019 at 11:56PM

I love the smell of finished compost... We just have to strain this and it'll be ready for the garden.

Our completed compost had tons and tons of worms!

Our second compost bin in it's new location.

More details here.

I'm sifting our finished compost so I can start a new batch in this bin. #compost #compostbin #biostack #blackgold #bucket #sifting #sifter January 21, 2019 at 03:59PM

Our compost bins are filled to the brim... mostly with all the fallen leaves from our garden and from my brother's humungous Planetree

I collected all the finished compost from one of our BioStack composter so I can move the unfinished compost from our other composter to this one. #compost #bucket #biostack #composter #compostbin #sifter #shovel November 25, 2017 at 06:20PM

Today's harvest: Almost two trash can full of finished compost. I needed to make some space in our compost bin to put in all out fallen leaves from the garden. #compost #compostbin #biostack #trashcan November 30, 2019 at 12:00AM

Oh Marvin!... #marvinthepossum #possum #critters #compost #opposum #biostack #compostbin May 20, 2020 at 10:31PM

I move the unfinished compost from the top portion of one compost bin to the other to aerate and mix it up... then collected and sifted the finished compost at the bottom. #compost #sifting #shovel #compostbin #biostack June 11, 2017 at 06:06PM

I sifted the unfinished compost from bin #2 leaving the completed compost behind. I then placed the uncompleted compost and some worms into bin #1 with the other unfinished compost.

First big garden task this long weekend was to collect the finished compost from our BioStack compost bin on the right. I sifted and collected 5 to 6 five-gallon pots full of compost. I then move all the unfinished compost from the left bin to the right to aerate it and let the almost finished compost finish in the left bin. I even found one of our lost pruners in the bin. #biostack #compost #composbin #pruner May 26, 2018 at 05:14PM

Collecting finish compost from the bottom of one of our BioStack compost bins. Sifting out bigger prices which will go back to compost more. #compost #sifter August 20, 2016 at 05:58PM

Adding leaves that my friend gave me to the empty compost bin. Thank you Janet! #leaves #biostack #compost #compostbin January 21, 2019 at 06:15PM

I filled this compost bin to the top just 2 weeks ago and it has already compacted down by one level... which is perfect timing because I need more space in the other bin. I'll move the top ring from this bin to the other so it'll have more room to me add more garden waste. I'll then repeat this step when this pile comes down one more level. #compost #compostbin #biostackcompostbin #biostack April 28, 2021 at 10:42PM

Got myself a third Biostack Compost Bin. I've been checking Craigslist every once in a while to see if one pops up and I finally saw one on Saturday and sent them an email saying I was interested in it. Both of our BioStack Compost Bins are full, so I can collect more yard waste to fill this third on up. #biostackcompostbin #biostack #smithandhawken #compostbin #compost September 06, 2021 at 07:22PM

I got a good workout today. I was running low on finished compost, so I sifted and emptied the contents of one of my BioStack Compost Bins. The sifted compost goes into a trash bin where I store my finished compost and the large parts goes back into my second compost bin. I then move that into the empty bin to further decompose... Oh, and I found one of my lost shovels inside one of the bins. #biostack #compostbin #biostackcompostbin #compost #trashcan #sifter October 30, 2021 at 11:00PM

Our two compost bins are full, so I decided to install a third one that I can use until I can empty the furthest one which has compost ready to sift and use. I just didn't feel like sifting compost today because it was windy. Took me a while to clear the space to put the third one, but it gave me a chance to throw some stuff away. I also had to cut back some evergreens against the fence so there would be space to walk... #compost #compostbin #biostack August 21, 2022 at 08:27PM

Empty compost bin... I was able to collect to bug tubs of finished compost. Now I'm going to move the unfinished compost in the second compost bin to this one. #compost #compostbin #biostack August 20, 2016 at 07:49PM

I'm going to let the completed compost dry up a little bit since it got too wet from a recent rain. I'll then place it in a container where we store completed compost and empty this bin (#2) out.
