Corpus Nil is a performance exploring hybrid forms of identity and musicianship through an intense and ritualistic interaction between an artificially intelligent musical instrument, a human body, and sound. A naked player performs a tense choreography which gradually morphs his body. Two types of wearable biosensors transmit data from his body to a software. Chip microphones capture sounds from muscles and internal organs (mechanomyogram or MMG) and electrodes capture muscle voltages (electromyogram or EMG).
The instrument re-synthesizes sounds produced within the performer’s body (between 1-40 Hz) by orchestrating a feedback network of twenty digital oscillators. Concurrently, the instrument learns the nuances of the performer’s movement (muscular tension, gesture abruptness, rate of relaxation) and chooses how to vary the musical output. The player cannot control the instrument, but only learn how to affect it and be affected by it. The piece discards conventional performer-instrument relationships–founded on the performer’s full control of the instrument–in favor of an unstable corporeal engagement between the two.

FDA researcher Dr. B.J. Yakes placing a sample tube into the autosampler rack of a biosensor instrument that detects foodborne pathogens and toxins. Hundreds of FDA scientists are working to develop the tools needed to keep bacterial and chemical contaminants out of the food supply, and to rapidly identify the disease-causing bacteria that do infiltrate foods and cause outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. Among them are the researchers at FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN), in College Park, Md.

Detail of a rack of test tubes containing polyaniline nanowire solution in the Vangie Alocilja lab at MSU.
Alocilja, an MSU AgBioResearch scientist and professor of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, has recently developed a sensor to detect Bacillus species and bovine viral diarrhea virus.
"Nanoscale materials are very different from their larger counterparts," said Alocilja. "For example, the smaller the particles get, the greater the changes in the particles' chemical, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties. Nanoparticles also have an increased surface area, which offers more space for interaction with other substances."

Study the science of art and the art of science. - Leonardo da Vinci
Installation artwork by Jo Ann Fleischhauer at the UT Health Science Center at Houston, MD Anderson Cancer Center, South Campus Research Building 3, 6th floor entryway corridor.
Jo Ann is the Artist-in-Residence in the Department of Nanomedicine and Biomedical Engineering (nBME), University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Nanotechnology is the study of the controlling of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures sized between 1 to 100 nanometer in at least one dimension, and involves developing materials or devices within that size (from Wikipedia).
The comparative size of a nanometer to a meter is the same as that of a marble to the size of the earth.
Nanomedicine is the medical application of nanotechnology. Nanomedicine ranges from the medical applications of nanomaterials, to nanoelectronic biosensors, and even possible future applications of molecular nanotechnology. Current problems for nanomedicine involve understanding the issues related to toxicity and environmental impact of nanoscale materials (Wikipedia).
Key features of the installation are, (1) the granite floor, an inlaid complexity of polyhedra, combining the five platonic solids with carbon 60, or the Buckyball, which became the building block of nanotechnology, (2) the graphics on the walls, and (3) the mirrored ceiling that provides a unique and elegant perspective.
Wall graphics include quotes and the Fibonacci Sequence, an infinite mathematical sequence of numbers starting with 0 or 1 where each succeeding number is the sum of the preceding two. The ratio of subsequent pairs of numbers expresses the “perfect” universal ratio of balance and harmony.
50 separate photographs were stitched together to create this image, a Precision and Approximation project.

‘Eunoia II’ involves using a commercial brainwave(EEG) headset as a self-monitoring tool to measure a performer’s physical and psychological states. This performance obtains a real-time feedback of a performer’s emotional reactions. Throughout the performance of ‘Eunoia II’, the intensity of a performer’s feelings at the time are mirrored in the intensity of the sound in terms of volume, pitch, speed, and the panning of the sound output. As a result, the water responded in real-time creating different formations of ripples and droplets in unpredictable patterns.

Professor Stewart Aitchison (ECE) has been elected a Corresponding Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE).
Professor Aitchison is one of the world’s most prominent researchers in the field of nonlinear optics, particularly the area of spatial optical solitons. His pioneering work in this area has led to the creation of new all-optical devices for signal processing applications, the demonstration of “the world’s fastest switch” in 1991, and the development of new types of light sources. In parallel, his work on optical biosensors has resulted in a lab-on-a-chip device that enables accurate monitoring of HIV in remote communities. His 250 journal publications have been cited over 9,850 times. He also holds eight patents, which have led to the creation of four new companies.

Long exposure photography of live imaging experiment with spinning Disk confocal microscope (Nikon TiE). Fluorescence images of neurons in acute section of mouse brain were captured every 30s in a chamber at 37°C with 5% CO2 during 3 hours. During this period, the investigator must remain in the darkness in order to monitor the behavior of specific cell infected with lentiviral vector coding for mitochondrial biosensor. This innovative technology permits to investigate specific question as the mitochondrial redox state of mitochondria during stress or pathologies.

Molecular dynamics simulation of translocation of a polymer of length N=100 through a narrow hole. The process is driven by an applied electric field.
Translocation is process that is abundant in nature and also very important for nanotechnology and other applications. For example, DNA sequencing techniques are being developed based in translocating DNA through narrow holes, drug delivery requires efficient translocation either through membranes or via transporter proteins and it is envisioned that translocation using carbon nanotubes may even be used for nanoscale biosensors and desalination of water. To understand the fundamental physics involved in translocation, it is necessary to study simple systems such as this.
