Time-lapse imaging of a FRET-based biosensor shows that the small GTPase Rab13 is activated (yellow) at the leading edge of a migrating breast epithelial cell by the exchange factor DENND2B. Ioannou et al. reveal that Rab13 activation promotes cancer cell invasion and metastasis.

MoodLight is an interactive ambient lighting system that responds to biosensor input related to an individual’s current level of arousal. Changes in levels of arousal correspond to fluctuations in the color of light provided by the system, altering the immediate environment in ways intimately related to the user’s private internal state. We use this intervention to explore personal and social implications of the ambient display of biosensor data. This study provides greater understanding of the ways in which the representations of personal information, with a focus on ambient feedback, influence our perceptions of ourselves and those around us.

Wang et al. describe how a diffusion-based gradient of Aurora B phosphorylation spreads outward from centromeres (right image, red). In this monopolar mitotic cell, the gradient is revealed by a FRET-based biosensor targeted to chromatin (right image, green), where blue indicates high phosphorylation levels and yellow indicates lower Aurora B activity (left image).

Battle of brainwaves. Biosensors read the electrical signals from each player's brain. Keep your brainwaves calm and steady to send the game ball rolling toward your opponent. A large monitor will display both players' brain activity in this ultimate game of mind control. (Note: Since this picture was taken the game now uses disposable, single-use electrode stickers.)

This user-friendly device consists of a sweat collection clip, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) biosensor, and a color densitometry-based iPhone app to monitor wellness. The noninvasive system measures cytokine concentrations in sweat to indicate health or illness. Inventors Riley Ennis ’15, Katherine Franklin ’15, Robert Lauzen ’15, and Kiah Williams ’15 won the Phillip R. Jackson Award for best overall performance in ENGS 21: “Introduction to Engineering.”
