In the BioHack Academy the focus is on making lab equipment accessible through the open source sharing of designs.

On 3 April 2018 the BioHack Academy students presented their final projects. Visitors could discover the future of food, materials and products during the end presentation of our students. The projects show the potential of biotechnology and its creative application. Roland van Dierendonck, head of the BioHack Academy introduced this year's BioHack Academy after which the students received the official BioHack Academy Award.

This years students are: Matthijs de Block (BE), Jahangir Jahanbahkshi (NL), Jan Köhler (DE/HN), Malu Lücking (DE), Laura Olalde (AR), Bart Peeters (NL), Anna Pelgrim (NL), Alexander Rose (UK), Nel Thomas (DK). More information on waag.org/biohack

Students of world's first BioHack Academy graduated and presented their work on Tuesday, April 21st, 2015.

In ten weeks, students from Waag Society's Biohack Academy built a fully functioning lab. They built everything, from homemade microscopes and centrifuges to handmade spectrometers and incubators—all with materials commonly found at home!

Ramy Kim, President of Counter Culture Labs (CCL), is an environmental health scientist-activist who works on biohacking and science outreach for public collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Around the world, maker spaces are placing the latest biological and genetic technologies into the hands of amateur scientists. From engineering new types of cheese or homemade insulin to tinkering with bioluminescent algae, citizen science initiatives are bringing laboratory science to the world, unleashing new forms of creativity and experimentation. We brought together key players from the Global Hackteria network, the Innovative Genomics Institute, Counter Culture Labs, Open Insulin, and McVicker Pickles for an evening exploring the future of biology through Do-It-Yourself projects ranging from brewing kombucha to extracting your own DNA for implantation into watermelons.
