As a response to the ongoing refugee crisis in Germany, the newspaper Bild recently started a campaign "Wir helfen" (We help). As part of this campaign, all first and second division football clubs were to wear a special arm patch for the game last weekend to raise awareness of the issue.
The problem was that Bild is an organ with a long history of high-octane rants against foreigners, guest workers, asylum seekers, refugees...
The first club that refused to take part in the campaign was St. Pauli in Hamburg. They pointed out the club was already involved in multiple projects of its own to help the refugees, and objected to the hypocrisy of Bild using the crisis for its own ends. Other teams followed suit, and at many stadiums across Germany the fans showed their distaste for the newspaper. Here in Darmstadt, fans unrolled a banner "Bild not welcome", and on a second attempt even got it the right way round.
