Photo from the February 1972 Bike World.

He was riding a modified Schwinn Paramount, oddly with steel cotter cranks (a throwback to the 50's...he places importance on their length, 223 mm). Low gear of 26F x 34R. His Time was 2:05. The record at the time was held by Jim Eads ( 1:47 )

The current record holder is Thomas Danielson 0:49:24 (2002) MWARBH.

Photo used in an article on helmets in the August 1977 Bike World. Mike Barnebey was tour director's right hand man for quite a few editions of TOSRV (Tour of the Scioto River Valley). He had a fleet of vintage Leica cameras (inherited from his father) that he would deploy on AYH (American Youth Hostel) outings in the Columbus Ohio area. He died from complications from being hit by a car while changing a flat tire on his Cooper Mini.

Great time trialist, amongst the best in the USA in the '70s. Hit by a truck during the 1978 National Time Trial Championships on a poorly designed and monitored course he sustained life threatening injuries. Though his career was sidelined, he defied expectations and resumed cycling (a friend recounted being on a 100 mile ride with him in which the group did 4:10...).

That's Why They Call It The Streak.

-Zealous Classic Road Race-

Here's another panning shot but with a twist. Instead of just panning with these two racers in a nice even keel I gave the camera a bit of a flick in the direction of the motion while the shutter was open to add even more blur. So in addition to the background being blurred there's an additional blur to the racers that sort of simulates the effect producted by a rear curtain flash used during a panning shot or a zoom blur shot. But it's a really low percentage shot. Still, out of maybe ten attempts I got one that I consider worth sharing. It was a personal milestone to create a photo like this with no flash.

View On White

I also wanted a slower shutter speed for this shot compared to the following photo where I had the shutter at 1/13s. I was able to get the shutter down to 1/5th of a second for this one by slowing down my ISO to 125. But on the D3s, going below 200 adds some noise (or something like that, please enlighten me on that bit).

Even at that the photo SOOC was over exposed and I had to drag down the exposure compensation in post processing.

Also, in camera I set picture control to vivid and set the WB to 9090 Kelvin. Metering mode was set at spot and focusing was AF-C (continuous servo) and Nikon's 51 point focus finder. Again aperature was at f/22.

This road race took place in the rural roads just south of Karrar, IA north of Bonderant. Rolling hillls and a brisk northerly wind at 52 degrees and light drizzle. A gruelling race for sure. Some racers completed a forty mile race while others went on to complete 80 miles.

In its 6 years of existence, the Iowa Cup competition has really become a part of the fabric of Iowa Cycling. It’s the best points system we have to truly recognize the best road racers in the state in each category.

Scan of cover of August/September 1972 Bike World

Close examination of the photo persuades me that these riders might be Gil Millard (L) and Ashley Molk (R).

Publisher was 24 year old Bob Anderson.

Cover photo: "The TOSRV-West is a new tour that is beginning to catch on. It is held in Missoula, Mont. and is this year's year [sic?] is set for May 21-22. Herer is a group preparing for the first year's tour. (Photo by Harley Harrick)"

This road race took place Saturday, May 14th, 2011 near the un-incorporated town of Karrar, IA between Des Moines and Marshalltown. Temps were in the low 50's and winds were from the north well above 20 mph. The racers in this photo don't seem daunted by the headwind but it had to have been killing them. There was light drizzle at the beginning which gradually tapered off. The 10 mile loop was completed four times by some classes and eight times by more advanced classes. The forty mile classes that I concentrated on completed the race in less than two hours.

This photo was shot by panning with the racers with a slow shutter speed to create motion blur. I could have been even more dramatic if I had a neutral density filter for my lens to block out more light and get an even slower shutter speed. But anything slower than 1/20th of a second is pretty much hit and miss. Out of a couple dozen slow shutter shots I tried I only got a few keepers.

So without a nd filter the best I could do was slow down my ISO to 200 and close down the aperature opening to f/22 which allowed me a slow shutter of 1/13th of a second. Next time I try this I will have a nd filter in my camera bag. The results, with patience, can be a lot of fun :)
